It presents biographical aspects of the Peruvian artist Julio Málaga Grenet (1886-1963) who have not yet been cared for by the history of art and who will be able to know his training as a graphic artist. It focuses on its first years, the entry into the press and its professionalization. From the participation in the magazine Lima Currentities analyzes its work in the field of the literary illustration and the publicity drawing.

Towards the 19th century, the process of massification of the image began through the development of new technical reproduction processes. In this framework, illustrated magazines emerged, which became the support of literate culture and marked the rise of graphic art. The present investigation aims to demonstrate how the artistic production system is transformed and the process of visual perception of the modern Lima reader is configured. Likewise, how the magazine El Correo del Perú innovates in the press with the inclusión of images and how a visual culture is elaborated that builds a discourse of modernity and progress in nineteenth-century Peru.

En la presente investigación se estudia la modernidad en la producción gráfica de Julio Málaga Grenet entre los años 1904, año de publicación de su primera obra en la revista Actualidades y 1910, año en que emigra a Buenos Aires (Argentina). Este período corresponde al de su formación como dibujante y de su producción inicial que se desarrolló en Lima. La tesis se desarrolla en tres capítulos. En el primer capítulo, titulado “Arte gráfico, modernidad y cultura visual en las revistas ilustradas limeñas decimonónicas”, se abordan los aspectos históricos y teóricos sobre la masificación de la imagen en el siglo XIX.
