This article do an approach to the impact of citizen activism during the earthquake of Ecuador on April 16, against the responsiveness of the mass media. The methodology considers the review of the activity of users on Twitter with two tools: Trendinalia and Twitter Reach, during 24 hours following the earthquake. First results indicate the importance of the user activity for informative production; however, Twitter, as an anarchic tool, it was evident the quantity of sources and much of the information was made about emotional issues.

This article presents the results of a descriptive quantitative exploratory study conducted in the countries of Colombia and Ecuador to assess the degree of media competence of 146 journalists from the cities of Medellín (Colombia) and Loja (Ecuador). A self-administered questionnaire was applied, structured with nine sociodemographic questions, four on the generalities of the level of media competence and 24 evaluative distributed in the six dimensions of this type of competition with their respective indicators. The general results of low and medium-level competition obtained by this group of professionals demand priority interventions from local, regional and international works that mobilize scientific, academic and political cooperation to improve the performance of a population that should lead the general formation of the citizenship in media competitions.

Media competence involves the mastery of knowledge, skills and attitudes oriented to the production, management, and analysis of media content with and from different environments that promote critical thinking. This article gathers the findings of a research conducted in four countries -Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, and Bolivia- where a quantitative measurement instrument of media competence was applied to a sample of 1,730 undergraduate students from eight universities. The research was limited to two social networks, YouTube, and Instagram, where user participation acquires greater relevance. The results indicate that in the use of these social networks there is a predominance of colloquial language and a limited production of content, focused on entertainment and personal tastes. Working conditions in Latin American media have been impacted by various crises such as the Covid-19 pandemic, political-social violence and the economic crisis. For this reason, we are interested in determining the demographic and psychosocial factors that influence the decision to stop working in the media. In a sample of 288 journalists from Ecuador (34.4%), Peru (28.1%) and Venezuela (37.5%), two ad-hoc surveys were applied: one for demographic variables and the other for psychosocial risk/protection factors. Bivariate analyses were carried out to compare those who want to leave their jobs with those who do not, and it was found that those who want to leave their jobs are characterized by being young, women, residing in capital, have received more threats of dismissal, workplace harassment, feel that their health has worsened and negatively evaluate their bosses.
