This article examines the initial points of a creative process that articulates new popular identities in Lima that comes from the economic and cultural circuit of chicha music. These are symbolically expressed in the graphic production called chicha aesthetics, which since the second decade of this century has been positioned with new vigor in the capital. Chicha aesthetics is a diversity of graphic, artistic and cultural productions that emerged approximately in 2010, it had its origin in the classic chicha poster that has been published on the walls of neighborhood houses in Lima since the 1970s. In this article, I will address the social and cultural processes involved in the shaping and popularity of the popular idol of Peruvian tropical music—chicha —, «Papá Chacalón.» He was a singer who emerged from the most marginalized sectors of Lima society. Among his followers are mayors, prisoners serving their sentence in jail, as well as men and women from the poor neighborhoods of Lima. Several decades after his death, there is a new legion of fans, «chicheros chacaloneros» (Chacalón’s followers). The popular idol, in this context, is configured based on and from the daily relationship between Chacalón and his followers. In Lima, new forms of artistic creation that come from the popular sphere have been produced since the beginning of the 21st century. Creations that come from the environment of Peruvian tropical music called chicha music. A significant first step was the change in the design and composition of the chicha poster, from advertising tropical music parties to one that conveyed ideas. In this way, it was connected with other popular and city spaces, becoming a diversity of creative proposals that were called chicha aesthetics. La presente investigación tiene como propósito el estudio de la música chicha. Este género musical, como producto de una serie de circunstancias que se han producido en estas tres últimas décadas, se ha convertido en un fenómeno socio-cultural de importancia. Su consumo mayoritario y su impacto en el país, sobre todo desde los años 1980 en adelante, ha despertado un inusitado interés, no sólo de cultores y detractores también de la intelectualidad, de estudiosos de la cultura, de científicos sociales que han visto en ella la manifestación de un Perú de esta época, discutiendo su rol dentro de la cultura peruana.

Aborda el estudio de la estética chicha como una de las producciones artístico culturales más significativas gestada en el ámbito popular urbano limeño a inicio del presente siglo, exteriorizada desde el 2010. Desde esta década se expande en Lima, surgen nuevos grupos y colectivos barriales de arte popular, trasciende hacia otros grupos sociales y artísticos de la ciudad.
