The aim of this study was to quantify the impact of selenium supplementation in the diet on daily bodyweight gain and feed intake and feed efficiency in pigs. Twenty-seven meta-analyzes were carried out from 13 scientific articles that included a total of 9608 animals. Effect size and heterogeneity were determined under the random effects model. Selenium supplementation was found to improve daily weight gain (+5.1 g/day) and feed efficiency (+1.5 g/kg of feed). In piglets, the daily weight gain increased by 12.5 g/day (p=0.003) and 14.8 g/day (p=0.007) in the general analysis and when the source was organic, respectively. Piglet feed efficiency was improved by 11.7 (p=0.00004), 8.3 (p=0.045) and 14.9 g/kg (p=0.0002) in the general analysis, inorganic and organic source, respectively. It is concluded that dietary selenium supplementation improves the productive performance of pigs, with g...

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of Saccharomyces cerevisiae supplementation plus an enzyme complex (amylases, lipases and proteases) on daily body weight gain and blood urea level in Holstein Friesian calves from 5 to 61 days of age. The daily weight gain was 514 versus 462 g/day of the control group. The urea level was significantly higher in the experimental group (30.11 mg/dl) than in the control group (22.98 mg/dl) (p<0.01). It is concluded that dietary supplementation of S. cerevisiae and enzymes favors protein metabolism in calves, although it is not sufficient to produce an improvement in daily weight gain.

The effect of selenium supplementation on reproductive and productive performance, tissue concentration and GSH-Px activity in sows and their progeny was evaluated in a meta-analysis study. Twelve articles were used that included 4698 animals. Under the random effects model, effect size, heterogeneity, meta-regressions and publication bias were determined. Reproductive variables were not affected by the source of selenium. Piglet birth weight was higher (p=0.031) in sows that received inorganic selenium (SeI) 1.47 vs. 1.46 kg from the organic source (SeO). Piglet weaning weight was 135 g greater (p=0.105) in sows from the SeO group. Tissue concentration showed that SeO increases Se to a greater extent in sow blood (0.209 ppm; p<0.00001), colostrum (0.324 ppm; p=0.002), milk (0.145 ppm; p<0.00001) and in tissues of progeny as liver (1.462 ppm; p=0.048) muscle (0.319 ppm; p<0.0000...

The intense genetic selection carried out in sows in the last decades has generated a hyperprolific sow with greater litter sizes and a greater proportion of piglets with weight lower than 1 kg, called low birth weight piglets (LBWP). The LWBP suffer from gastrointestinal morphophysiological alterations, which generates a lower digestive capacity in order to efficiently take advantage of the nutrients of the diet, affecting their productive performance and survival. This has triggered a series of research to find nutritional and feeding alternatives that allow this type of piglets to achieve better productive parameters. The objective of this document was to gather information about the most important digestive alterations in LBWP and the nutritional options to improve their survival and productive performance.
