Numerous studies show a high prevalence of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases in adults and older adults, although their frequency increases in young people. An exploratory, descriptive study was carried out on first-year medical students from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM), to know the physical activity levels and the criteria for metabolic syndrome (MS). The study was accepted by an Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine. Statistical analysis was performed with Stata v6. 56.7% of the students are 17-19 years old, and 53.3% are female; 56.7% have a monthly per capita family income greater than 500 soles, and 76.7% come from urban Lima. 83.4% had limited physical activity, being the most frequent MS  components: elevated abdominal circumference (36.7%) and low levels of high-density cholesterol (23.3%). The only variable with statistical association wit...

Introduction. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), in 2017 there were three million people with disabilities in our country. A critical review is made of the information available on the Peruvian Public Health Society (SPSP), inaugurated as a scientific-union organization in August 1950, and deactivated at the end of 1968 by a de facto government. With this review, 53 years after this deactivation occurred, we want to keep alive the memory of his efforts for doctrinal unification and technical modernization of Peruvian public health in a difficult context; as well as paying posthumous tribute to his associates, who taught us - with deeds rather than words - what should be the conduct of a Peruvian sanitarian.

Objetive: Evaluate the quality of doctoral theses at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. Methods: Descriptive study, which consisted of the review of 114 theses on health topics in all four doctoral programs - Medicine, Nursing, Health Sciences and Neurosciences - from the creation of the first doctoral program in 1999, until 2020. Four quality indicators were used: scientific problem, sample, analysis (comparability) and conclusions, as well as other complementary indicators to evaluate the writing of the thesis and its social relevance, categorizing them into excellent, acceptable and not acceptable. Results: With the quality indicators there were 32 excellent theses (28.1%), 34 (29.8%) acceptable, and 48 (42.1%) not acceptable. On the other hand, 63 theses (55.2%) had good syntax (acceptable) and in 5 (3.4%) did not make good use of scientific term...

The indiscriminate use of antimicrobials in pediatric intensive care units (PICU) can complicate the effectiveness of treatments. A tertiary pediatric hospital in Peru implemented an antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) in its PICU. Our objective was to compare patients' survival before and after the ASP implementation in the study site's five PICU. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort observational study. The first group consisted of patients treated from mid-2016 to early 2017 (n=611), and the second group consisted of patients treated from late 2017 to mid-2018 (n=567). Results: Following the implementation of the ASP, we did not identify differences in PICU length of stay but observed variations in the duration of treatment with certain restricted antimicrobials. Additionally, we did not find a difference in survival after implementing the ASP in either crude or adjust...

Objective: To evaluate the impact of an educational intervention in reducing the prevalence of overweight and obesity, in diet and in the levels of physical activity of primary school children. Methods: The study was quantitative, analytical, quasiexperimental. The sample consisted of 272 elementary school students, divided into two groups of 136 children each, with intervention and without educational intervention. Nutritional status was measured at the beginning and after the educational intervention in both groups. The intervention consisted of carrying out training activities on healthy eating, healthy lifestyle, wáter intake and physical activity, all through playful games and educational workshops. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM - School of Medicine). Reults: The age of the students was between 6 and 1...
