This article is born from a project linked to the research line Educational Practices, Culture, Diversity and Inclusion, carried out by the Pro-Rectory of  Research and Postgraduate Studies (PROPEG) of the State University of Rio Grande do Norte (UERN / BRAZIL). The aim of this study is to understand how the success of a UERN undergraduate student at the popular level and with poor vision has contributed to his social progress from Basic Education to Higher Education. This article aimed to understand what teachers say about their literacy skills. To this end, we discuss the historicity of literacy, about what literacy and literacy would be, seeking to bring current theoretical foundations about the process of acquisition of reading and writing by deaf students enrolled in Early Childhood Education and Elementary School I. We also approach the subject of writing and literacy and the role of the literacy teacher. The research was developed with two teachers and pedagogical support from CAS Mossoró, as they work with specialized educational assistance to deaf students enrolled in the Education modality of the municipal teaching network of Mossoró/RN. O presente artigo objetivou compreender o que os professores dizem sobre as suas práticas de alfabetizar letrando. Para tal discorremos sobre a historicidade da alfabetização, sobre o que seria a alfabetização e letramento procurando trazer fundamentos teóricos atuais sobre o processo da aquisição da leitura e da escrita por alunos surdos matriculados na Educação Infantil e no Ensino Fundamental I.
