La Guerra del Pacífico y sus consecuencias discursivas son un tópico recurrente en el imaginario nacional y, por esta vía, también en las expresiones de nacionalismo banal, cuyo mayor exponente en el Perú es el futbol. Este proyecto pretende entender cómo se expresa esa narrativa en el discurso futbolístico durante el proceso clasificatorio a la Copa Mundial de Futbol de la FIFA 2018, para lo cual pretende identificar los elementos de esa narrativa y determinar los diversos usos que se le otorgan a la historia en ese proceso. Asimismo, defiende que el discurso construido desde los medios y los sectores populares arguye la existencia de un conflicto de larga data, sin solución de continuidad entre los sucesos bélicos pretéritos y los sucesos deportivos recientes.
