Objective: To assess the antibacterial activity of Psidium guajava fractions and their effects on adhesion of a multispecies biofilm consisting of Streptococcus gordonii, Fusobacterium nucleatum, and Porphyromonas gingivalis in vitro. Material and Methods: Guava leaves were obtained from the mountains of northern Peru, where they grow wild and free of pesticides. The antimicrobial activity of 25 mg/mL petroleum ether, 25 mg/mL dichloromethane and 25 mg/mL methanol fractions of P. guajava was evaluated by measuring inhibition halos, as well as the effect on the adhesion of multispecies biofilms at 4, 7 and 10 days of growth by measuring the optical density. In addition, antimicrobial susceptibility was compared using the Kruskal-Wallis test and its multiple comparison tests, and differences in mean biofilm adhesion between each fraction were assessed by repeated measures analysis and the ...

Objective: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the antibacterial effect of Peruvian propolis and the action of a methanolic fraction on an in vitro biofilm of Streptococcus gordonii ATCC® 51656™ and Fusobacterium nucleatum ATCC® 10953™. Materials and Methods: Through sequence experiments, 13 propolis from the Peruvian Andes were collected and evaluated by measuring their antibacterial effect on S. gordonii and F. nucleatum strains through inhibition halos. Chlorhexidine and DMSO were used as controls. Organic raw extracts, partitions and propolis fractions were evaluated; besides, it was evaluated propolis cytotoxicity on HGF-1-ATCC CRL-2014 cell lines through colorimetric techniques of 3-(4.5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl) -2.5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) and optical density. Finally, the effect of propolis on biofilm was evaluated by confocal microscopy and PCR. Resu...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of azithromycin associated with the RAR in patients with chronic periodontitis. They involved 30 adult patients, randomized into 2 groups designated by the letters A and B of 15 members each. Each patient was evaluated periodontally before Give you the scaling and root planing and optimization hygiene techniques. Patients in group A were prescribed antibiotic treatment with azithromycin 500 mg orally every 24 hours for 3 days and group B were prescribed a placebo with the same physical characteristics of the antibiotic chosen. Patients were evaluated at 3, 4 and 5 months. Efficacy was evaluated using the Student t test to compare means, considering a level of significance for the values of p <0.05. It was found that both groups were able to improve probing depth and clinical grip level however no statistically significant differences bet...

Objective: To determine the C-reactive protein level according to the periodontal state, age and trimester of pregnancy in pregnant women who attend the Centro de Salud Magna Vallejo, Cajamarca, Peru. Materials and methods: An observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study conducted in a sample of 60 pregnant women divided into three groups: those who were periodontally healthy, those with gingivitis and those with periodontitis. The Russell Index was used to determine the periodontal status. The value of the C-reactive protein level was taken from each patient’s medical record. Results: An elevated C-reactive protein level was found in 66.70 % of the pregnant women with gingivitis, 100 % of the pregnant women with periodontitis and 84.60 % of the adult pregnant women. Conclusions: C-reactive protein levels tend to rise in patients with periodontal disease and increase in adult ...

Objective: To determine the in vitro antibacterial effect of different concentrations of the ethanol extract of Plantago major (plantain) on Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum. Material and Methods: Bacterial susceptibility tests were used in conjunction with the agar diffusion test and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test using the broth macrodilution technique. Results: Different concentrations of ethanol extract (25%, 50%, 75% and 100%) dissolved in 70% ethanol were used, with a positive control (0.12% chlorhexidine + 0.05% cetyl-pyridinium chloride) and a negative control (70% alcohol). The extracts at 75% and 100% showed inhibition halos against both strains studied. With 0.12% chlorhexidine + 0.05% cetyl-pyridinium chloride, inhibition halos averaged 14.9 mm, in contrast to 70° alcohol, where no bacterial inhibition was observed. The MIC was 50% for bo...

“Background: The great difference in scientific production among countries, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean, may be related to the economic growth of each nation, but countries with larger economies do not necessarily have higher scientific production. Political changes and unstable economies result in little sustainability of scientific production in the countries in these regions. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of economic growth on scientific production, measured as the variation in the gross domestic product and the number of scientific publications, in Latin American and Caribbean countries. Methods: The analyzed information was collected from the open data source of the World Bank for the years from 2000 to 2018. The analysis was performed using unbalanced data panel models that cross-sectionally considered the countries of Latin America and t...

Objective: To determine the inhibitory effect of the methanolic fraction of propolis from Oxapampa, Peru, on different genotypes of Streptococcus mutans in children diagnosed with caries. Materials and methods: 150 oral swab samples were collected, seeded for isolation of S. mutans and then identified by biochemical tests of carbohydrate fermentation, Api 20 Strep (bioMérieux) and conventional PCR. The 138 strains isolated and identified from patients and the S. mutans ATCC® 25175™ control were confronted with the methanolic fraction by the disk diffusion method, having as positive control 0.12% chlorhexidine and negative control Milli-Q water and DMSO (1:1). Results: It was found that the inhibition diameter of the strains extracted from children diagnosed with caries against the methanolic fraction showed greater diameter (14.13 mm) in relation to the strain of S. mutans ATCC® 251...
