OBJECTIVE: To know characteristics of multiple pregnancies and to determine benefits of early diagnosis, prenatal control and continuous prenatal assessment to decrease perinatal morbidity and mortality in pregnant women at Loayza Hospital. DESIGN: Descriptive and retrospective study of multiple gestations occurred during 1,997. RESULTS: In 42 multiple pregnancies (39 twins - 3 triplets; incidence: 1: 125 and 1: 1,625) with maternal ages from 17 to 42 years old, 73,8% (31) bad good prenatal controls; 90,5% got ultrasound diagnosis during prenatal control, before 28 weeks in 61,9% (26 patients); 42,9% of pregnancies reached term and the most frequent pathologies were anemia, preeclampsia, disminishing the chance of preterm labor in comparison with previous studies. Abdominal delivery was 76,2% because of an abnormal fetal position (44,8%), severe preeclampsia (20,7%) and previous cesarean...

Objectives: To determine risk factors associated with vaginal vault hematoma infection following vaginal hysterectomy. Design: Retrospective, descriptive, casecontrol study. Setting: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Hospital Nacional Arzobispo Loayza, Lima, Peru. Participants: Women subjected to vaginal hysterectomy. Methods: Ninety clinical charts (30 cases, 60 controls) of patients subjected to vaginal hysterectomy during 2008-2009 were reviewed. Statistical analysis used SPSS 17.0 program, as all variables were adapted to qualitative denomination and as the dependent variable was dichotomic we used simple and multiple logistic regression analysis to determine association and confusion variables. We considered significative p < 0,05. Main outcome measures: Infected vaginal vault hematoma. Results: Infected vault hematoma prevalence was 6.1%. Multiple logistic regression analysi...

Objectives: To determine the correlation between FSH levels and the decrease in bone mineral density in perimenopausal women. Design: Case-control study. Setting: Hospital Nacional Arzobispo Loayza, Lima, Peru. Patients: Perimenopausal women. Methods: Clinical charts of 114 perimenopausal women attending Gynecology office A Hospital Arzobispo Loayza, during September 2007 through September 2009 were reviewed. Cases consisted in 38 perimenopausal women with osteopenia or osteoporosis and controls by 76 perimenopausal women with normal bone mineral density. Analysis was performed with SPSS v.17 program. Main outcome measures: Correlation of FSH levels and decreased bone density. Results: We found an estimated incidence of 30.7% for osteopenia and 2.6% for osteoporosis. Patients with FSH levels >40 mUI/mL showed 5 times more risk of developing osteopenia than those with FSH <25 mUI/ mL (O...

Introduction: The surgical management of stress urinary incontinence uses the transobturator tape (TOT) technique since 2006. We present a study applying the suburethral tape as a better alternative that does not require the TOT needle. Objective: To demonstrate the advantages of the suburethral tape placement technique over the transobturator tape technique in the surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence. Methods: Observational comparative study using the noninvasive suburethral tape placement versus the transobturator tape technique. Results: Fifty patients were treated with TOT for stress urinary incontinence and other 50 patients were managed with suburethral tape placement (UTP) in the previous shift the same day or the preceding day. The TOT patients were 56 years old on average, and time of the procedure was 18 minutes on average. Complications included pain in the inguin...
