El criollismo de Palma es cultural, por eso es imaginario en nosotros; este criollismo es de nuevo cuño, que puede encontrar precedentes en las obras de Pardo y Segura, pero muy diferente en su creatividad y riqueza estilística, que es a la vez ‘expresión de un alma mestiza’ popular, en el que se yergue ‘nuestra comedia humana con sus mil personajes’; carece de verdad y de eficacia para el cambio social, cambio que en las Tradiciones tiene un sentido diferente, que nos permite imaginar un ‘nosotros’ capaz de negar y afirmar, conservar y olvidar; de imaginar su protagonismo con el sentido del pensar, como el ejercicio de una actividad crítica o de transformar la característica destructiva de la actividad de pensar en resultados que sean positivos y provechosos, generando estados de perplejidad.
