Mediante encuesta anónima a 40 médicos y 360 pacientes en el Hospital III Víctor Lazarte Echegaray, en diciembre de 1997 se identifica un perfil de "calidad en la atención del médico" así como las estrategias para mejorar la calidad en la atención del profesional. Las características encuestadas fueron, a) Trato adecuado, b) coherencia entre lo que se dice y hace, c) capacidad profesional, d) interés genuino por los aspectos humanos, e) comunicación apropiada, y f) respeto a la profesión.
