More than a century ago, the Peruvian writer Enrique López Albújar published the book Cuentos andinos (1920), a collection of ten stories generally protagonized by indigenous characters, and which have the Andean world as their narrative space. Literary critics have emphasized the foundational character of this book of stories, since it represents, for the first time, the Andean character called: The Indio. This text does not intend to discuss whether the Indian represented by López Albújar is or is not true, is or is not a criminal; but, on the contrary, our attention is focused on the study of the representation of the figure of the judge in the story «The Case of Julio Zimens». We will describe and explain our thoughts on the judge, the judicial system, and its paradoxes.

Enrique López Albújar nace el 23 de noviembre de 1872, en la hacienda Pátapo, ubicada en la ciudad de Chiclayo. Sus padres fueron Manuel López, de origen piurano, y Manuela Albújar, de Lambayeque. Cada vez que se le preguntaba por su terruño, López Albújar, primogénito de la pareja de esposos, respondía: piurano. Es en esta cálida ciudad donde será bautizado y donde le extenderán la partida de nacimiento. La infancia de Enrique transcurrirá entre Morropón y Piura. De hecho, la etapa formativa escolar, entre 1878 y 1885, la realizará en Morropón, ciudad en la que dos maestros marcarán su experiencia como estudiante del nivel primario: el severo, estricto y distante maestro Miguel Piedra, y el entrañable y amigable maestro Nicanor Calderón.

This article focuses on the figure of the first Peruvian female lawyer: María Josefa Trinidad Enríquez Ladrón de Guevara. Therefore, it will present and explain some of the significant moments of her life experience that served to build her image as a Peruvian intellectual in the field of law.

This article seeks to explain some of the reflections of Miguelina Aurora Acosta Cárdenas (1887-1933) on the legal status of women. To this end, we divide the text into two parts. The first part describes the process of Miguelina’s intellectual formation, and the second part comments on and explains the main ideas that the author developed in articles published in journals of the time and in her university theses on the necessary modern orientation that the rules and institutions that regulate the rights and opportunities of men and women should have.

The Spanish critical tradition has given to the studies on the work of César Vallejo remarkable contributions that are scattered in books, prologues, notes, articles, several university theses and the elaboration of editions of the different collections of poems of the bard from Santiago de Chile. The realization of the III International Congress Vallejo Siempre 2018 in Salamanca, Spain, is a propitious occasion to reflect on the state of the Vallejo question in the Spanish academic community, as well as to exchange knowledge about the research being carried out in different parts of the world. The commemoration of the centenary of Los heraldos negros (1919) motivated the Centro de Estudios Vallejianos, in alliance with the Rectorate of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, the Rectorate of the Universidad Ricardo Palma, the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (Argentina) and the Centro de Estudios Vallejianos of the University of London, to hold a historic international congress in the city of Lima to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the publication of César Vallejo's first collection of poems.

This fifth issue of the journal Archivo Vallejo brings together a set of research that seeks to propose a re-reading of Vallejo's collection of poems. The articles that are grouped here, in this sense, inform not only about the history of the poem's reception, that is to say, they not only present and comment on the evaluations that it carried, for and against, of the publication, and that circulated in the press of the time, but also propose to reread the critical production in the light of current research in the field of humanities.

The life and work of the Peruvian poet César Vallejo (1892-1938) enjoy wide attention from literary critics. During the 20th century, and in the first decades of the 21st century, a consistent trend within César Vallejo Studies, that is, the critical production centered on Vallejo’s multiple facets as the gentleman, the poet, the storyteller, the playwright, the chronicler, and the essayist, has been preserved. Even though the interpretations have adopted new methodological approaches, and also in spite of the fact that the historical-biographical interest offers important holistic insights, there is an episode in Vallejo’s life that has not to date been analyse in sufficient depth: it is his internment and imprisonment in the jail in Trujillo for 112 days, between November 6, 1920, and February 26, 1921. The Peruvian Traditions, Ricardo Palma’s masterpiece, has been the subject of study by literary critics, both historiographical and analytical. Some approaches from the field of literary studies have connected the life and the work, and other approaches have explained the stylistic features and the use of ironic forms. But the Palmian traditions are also substantially important because they represent diverse processes related to the knowledge they provide about architecture, engineering, psychology, medicine and other fields of knowledge. In this text we offer an analytical mapping of a set of articles by «new researchers» that were published in the indexed journal El Palma de la Juventud. Se cumplen cien años de la publicación de dos obras vallejianas cruciales para comprender el devenir estético de su autor. Se trata de Escalas y Fabla salvaje (1923-2023). Justamente para reflexionar sobre el texto en sí mismo, como también sobre las lecturas que se hicieron de estas piezas narrativas, el décimo segundo número de la revista Archivo Vallejo dedica sus páginas a difundir investigaciones centradas en los relatos que componen la ópera prima narrativa de Vallejo: Escalas.

This paper analyzes and interprets the content and formal elements in Cesar Vallejo’s thesis: Romanticism in Spanish poetry (1915). It is suggested that the thesis is read as the scenery of the exposure of ideas where Vallejo not only expresses his systematic knowledge about the history of romantic poetry as well as his comprehension of the logic that encourages the critical discourse and his relationship with literature. This involves reading the thesis in a way that provides insight into that Vallejo, who wrote Los heraldos negros (‘The Black Heralds’, 1919), is an author that doesn’t ignore the dialectic that goes through the different literary manifestations, historic and social series. This article systematizes and shows the four models of edition followed by the ecdotica on Vallejo’s poetry. Each of them is framed in the historiographical context that goes from the sixties of the 20th century (pre-critical edition and critical edition) to the second decade of the 21st century (diplomatic edition). The historiographical and analytical explanation of these editions reveals the insistence on replicating models of editing, and not on innovating them; therefore, the need to reorient Vallejo’s ecdotics towards the critical texts that established the first protocols of reading about the life and work of César Vallejo is proposed, among these, the legal-critical approach that Germán Patrón Candela describes in the text El proceso Vallejo (The Vallejo Process, 1992). Precisamente, por ello, se analizarán y explicarán estos componentes de la historia de la administración y la reflexión judiciales desde las coordenadas del derecho en la literatura. Contribuye al conocimiento sistemático de una de las obras de César Vallejo poco estudiadas por la crítica nacional e internacional. Se trata del primer libro que el poeta publicó bajo el título El Romanticismo en la poesía castellana (1915), tesis que Vallejo defendió el 22 de septiembre de 1915, frente a un jurado conformado por José María Checa (Rector), Julio F. Quevedo Lizarzaburo y Eleazar Boloña (Replicantes) y los doctores Cecilio Cox y Saniel Chávarry. El primero de estos (Cox) fue reemplazado por don Guillermo E. Ramírez.
