La investigación sobre comunicación se ha centrado tradicionalmente en los productos basados en el pensamiento ilustrado y racional (información política, información económica, géneros de opinión...) y ha despreciado otros productos (ficción, prensa femenina...) basados en el pensamiento de carácter simbólico que apelan a los sentimientos y que “no se ajustan a los esquemas valorativos logocéntricos”. Las series de ficción televisivas forman parte de la cotidianidad de muchas personas y, por lo tanto, no se deberían tratar desde el punto de vista académico como productos marginales o de segundo orden; estudiarlos es explicar una parte de la vida de sus espectadores.

Young people use social networks extensively in their daily lives, and using social media is, without doubt, the media practice they do the most. Therefore, there are increasing efforts to include students’ use of social media outside the classroom into university learning practices. However, there is still very little innovative application of mobile technology and its social networks in Spanish universities. In this article we explore Spanish university students’ perceptions of the use of social networks for educational purposes in the classroom. We found students to have an ambivalent perception as they are both critical and approving of using mobile devices in university teaching. Abstract. The present article aims to present a reflection, within the Ibero-American context, on the use of digital resources in the classroom and its relationship with media education to highlight common points and diverse strategies in addressing both aspects in education systems, as well as to establish the main challenges for a real media education that could take advantage of new technologies in the classroom. The methodology used for this purpose is mainly based on a systematic review of the litera­ture on the subject performed between the years 2012 and 2018. Moreover, the article addresses some of the results of the “Citizen’s media competencies in emerging digital media in university environments” project (2016-2019) from the National Research, Development and Innovation (I+D+I) Plan of the Spanish Government.
