This research proposes to study centralities based on how they relate to urban density. It starts with Lima’s urban process, where there are four important plans. The first plan guided expansion beyond the walls of the city. The second one constituted a single traditional metropolitan centrality. The third one lowered urban density by extending urban limits. Finally, the fourth one proposes a conceptual scheme to integrate large expansion areas through comprehensive service centers, thus marking an urban structure with a single large centrality and different agglomerations of houses that are dispersed as they expand in the periphery. In the last decade, there has been a consolidation of a continuous territory that is still functionally dispersed in terms of its equipment and morphology. Within the framework of urban compactness, we propose a methodological approach to create integrati...

Cities are the largest complex adaptive system in human culture and have always been changing in time according to largely unplanned patterns of development. Though urban morphology has typically addressed studies of form in cities, with emphasis on historical cases, diachronic comparative studies are still relatively rare, especially those based on quantitative analysis. As a result, we are still far from laying the ground for a comprehensive understanding of the urban form’s model of change. However, developing such understanding is extremely relevant as the cross-scale interlink between the spatial and social-economic dynamics in cities are increasingly recognized to play a major role in the complex functioning of urban systems and quality of life. We study the urban form of San Pedro de Ate, an informal settlement in Lima, Peru, along its entire cycle of development over the last s...

Since the 2000s, Lima city shows important changes in its socio-spatial structure, decreasing the long-established opposition between the centre and the periphery, developing a more complex arrangement. Sustained national economic growth has allowed better socio-economic conditions in different areas of the city. However, high inequality still remains in the ways of production of urban space, which affects residential segregation. To identify possible changes in the segregation patterns of Metropolitan Lima, this study focuses on the spatial patterns of occupational groups, examining their causes and relation with income inequality. The analysis is based on the 1993 and 2007 census data, measuring residential segregation by the Dissimilarity Index, comparing with the Diversity Index. The results confirm trends towards increased segregation between occupational groups. Top occupational gr...
