Through an examination of several episodes we will study the persistence of the practice of duels and honor fights in the political atmosphere of republican Peru. Each episode reveals different interests which aimed to maintain the duel as a mechanism to avoid or limit freedom of expression or debate. A good number of members of the political and social elite defended dueling in the press as an acceptable practice even though it was penalized by government law. This attitude can be seen as concomitant with repression of political organizations in the country and the maintaining of a type of patriarchal domination which called for the prolonged exclusion of women from citizenship.

This article examines the chronology-building of Peruvian Independence based on calendars published between 1821 and 1840. It also analyzes different approaches to the Independence process by authors like Valdez y Palacios, Pruvonena (Riva Agüero), S. Távara, C. Lissón, S. Lorente, M. F. Paz Soldán, and Rodríguez. Their writings show a diversity of solutions to the ambiguity that marked the process and their efforts to enclose it within an unambiguous and continuous temporal sequence.

There is a good deal of data to suggest that the corregimiento of Conchucos was a significant textile production center. The systematization of this data has allowed us to map out the geography of the textile economy in the area, highlighting those zones where the work was carried out. On the other hand, although the lack of series for the textile production of Conchucos precludes a study of this sector that is comparable with that of Huamanga or Cusco, the available demographic information for the corregimiento allows the long-term evolution of its textile economy to be traced through to the eventual division into provinces during the Republican era. This analysis allows the ethnic and gender distribution of work in the textile sector to be discerned, while elucidating some of the elements of economic change that affected this territory.

Thinking of history as a form of total consciousness implies concern for a study of the past that allows us to understand the present. "Aristocracia y Plebe. Lima, 1760-1830" by Alberto Flores-Galindo (Mosca Azul Editores. Lima, 1984), is a text that is decidedly inclined towards this purpose, and this is its greatest merit. And, paradoxically, it reveals its greatest weakness. Topics that the author analyzes, such as racism and urban violence, lead us to a reflection that goes beyond the current situation; In this, they fully meet the objective of making the past an instrument for understanding the present. But the rationalization of that design also requires that we become aware of the preconceptions that contemporary experience inculcates, otherwise we will project them uncritically on the phenomena of the past.
