Current data from the site of Cerro Lampay (an architectural compound of the Late Archaic Period) provide new insights on the architectural design that characterizes the early complex societies of the north central coast. Excavations at this site have provided a detailed record of the major traits that can be found in a typical architectural compound that correspond to the Late Archaic Period in this region. The analysis of the spatial structure and the sensorial experience of the architecture of Cerro Lampay suggest a scenario of a human community in which leaderships were emerging whereas dual principles of social organization were also appearing. The results of these analyses are compared with recent finds on other neighboring sites such as Caral, in order to propose new perspectives to understand the rise of social complexity in the Central Andes.

I present in this article the results of survey and mapping at sites with early monumental architecture in the Middle Fortaleza Valley. Architecture provisionally assigned to the Late Archaic period is analyzed, and some hypotheses on its development are proposed. The Fortaleza sites are then compared with other ones throughout the North Central Coast. I propose that the architectural complexes in this region seem to correspond to local-range sociopolitical entities, instead of large, regional polities. Finally, I conclude with some thoughts on new theoretical perspectives to understand the origins and development of such entities.

Jeffrey Klaiber is recognized for his prolific work, characterized by a methodical retrieval and presentation of information. His care for objectivity in the historical judgment did not mean, however, an absence of involvement or of taking a position in the historical process. The text Globalization and Evangelization in the XVI and XXI centuries. Ideology versus utopia, which is an inaugural lecture of the year 2005 at the Antonio Ruiz de Montoya University, puts in evidence his commitment and bet for utopia, understood as the human action aimed at materializing dreams and longings for a better society.

We present the results of XRF analyses on a sample of brown wares from Huaca 21 (Middendorf) of the Maranga Complex, which correspond to the Lima culture occupation. The analyses reveal that they are exogenous to Maranga and the coastal region. Furthermore, a formal comparison with ceramics recovered in the middle and upper valleys of Chancay and Chillón suggests that brown wares might have been produced in highland loci and, hence, their presence at Lima sites open a series of inquiries on the nature of coast-highland interactions during the Early Intermediate Period and the beginnings of the Middle Horizon Period in central Perú.
