La presente publicación es el resultado de las I Jornadas Internacionales sobre la Frontera Hispano-Portuguesa y sus For-tificaciones, celebradas entre los días 8 y 10 de noviembre de 2012 en Badajoz, organizadas en secciones, que incluye-ron a reconocidos especialistas europeos y americanos en diversas materias (Geo-grafía y territorio, Historia, Patrimonio, Arquitectura y Urbanismo), así como de los estudios del territorio limítrofe entre España y Portugal, los cuales contem-plan las distintas relaciones sociocultu-rales que allí se suscitan y la respectiva arquitectura militar de frontera. This book is based on the original manuscript As Defesas da Ilha of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande de Sao Pedro, made up between 1786 and 1789 by the military engineer José Correia Rangel, a document that contains very valuable information: maps, tables, plants of the fortifications and uniforms of the troops of the time, as well as the history of Santa Catarina's and Rio Grande de San Pedro's fortifications. To this has been added some additional contents and others of didactic character (introductory texts and explanatory notes), which are complemented with photographs of the still existing fortifications, other illustrations of the time and a glossary.

Por lo general cuando uno piensa en construcciones militares imagina castillos con torres, murallas y portones, o tal vez puede pensar en fortalezas coloniales con baluartes. Es decir, piensa en edificaciones de uso bélico propios de la cultura europea, pero no pensaría en un “Gongsimdon” o en un “Jangdae”. The construction of Dos de Mayo’s Square, at the end of the 19th century, was the beginning of a new idea of a city in Peru. The viceregal idea of the city was forgotten, the walls were demolished and the modernization of the city of Lima was proposed. It is in this context that the eight buildings that make up the square were built. They were also the result of a new building idea in which the viceregal idea of a house-patio was replaced by an architecture of French influence. In conclusion, it can be said that the square and its eight buildings marked a milestone in architecture and urban planning in Peru. At present, these important buildings are in terrible condition, especially the 4th building, which suffered a fire in 2014. For this reason, this project proposes its restoration and conservation.

The Real Felipe Fortress was one of the most important stronghold of the Spanish Monarchy and the scene of important historical events. It was a key stronghold that controlled the port of Callao, gateway to Lima. One of the greatest examples of Spanish military architecture of the 18th century. Over time it has undergone different interventions and changes of use, it was only in the twentieth century where it was aware of its heritage value and was restored at different times, with different approaches and results. It should be noted that no patrimonial investigations have been carried out.
