The implementation of efficient grazing technologies in high mountain cattle ranches in the department of Nariño (Colombia) increases the sustainability of these production systems and promotes the conservation of the landscape design. With the objective of evaluating the dry matter intake of F1 (Kiwi-cross x Holstein) and Holstein cattle biotypes, present in hillside areas of the Nariño mountain, a preliminary trial of individual consumption of ryegrass (Lolium perenne) was carried out in Pasto (Nariño-Colombia) with the gauging technique, and the results were compared with models reported in the literature. The data were analyzed as a completely randomized design, with repeated measures over time. Intake per gauging was higher (p<0.05) in Holstein cows, with respect to F1 cows (12.74 vs. 9.69 kg/dry-matter/day), but per unit live weight was similar (p>0.05). On the other hand,...

In most livestock systems in the high Andean tropics of South America, there are few species of grasses to feed livestock, and the climatic variability affecting these regions means that the supply and quality of fodder for animal feed is declining. It is therefore necessary to implement supplementation strategies, with techniques such as silage, which is characterized by easy adoption among producers. The use of shrub fodder species adapted to the high Andean areas could be an alternative to store food, and be used in times of shortage, for its good contribution of biomass and nutrients. The objective of this literature review was to compile studies of nutritional quality and/or animal response, using silage from shrub fodder species in the high Andean tropics. The search for information was carried out during the months of March to May 2020, using key terms. Among the species most used...

Silvopastoral systems are used in livestock in Andean milk basins. Alnus acuminata (Kunth) is one of the forestry species employed for their benefits in this kind of productive models. With the objective of providing knowledge about the specie, in the AGROSAVIA Obonuco’s Research Center located in the municipality of Pasto (Nariño, Colombia) 26 individuals of A. acuminata aged 22 years established in scattered trees were evaluated. Seven dasometric variables, 14 morphological descriptors, opacity and light intensity in two environments (direct sunlight and under canopy) were included in the study. In the individuals of A. acuminata average values were recorded in total height of 11.74 m and in DBH of 19.17 cm, with crown dimensions in height of 2.3 m, size of 9.5 m, diameter of 7.61 m and area of 49.69 m2. Regarding to architecture, they exhibited predominant semicircular shape (65.38...

High Andean dairy farming is characterized by intensive and inefficient management of natural resources. Its operation is based on pastures of low nutritional quality that do not cater to the essential needs of the animals for their growth and production. One way to improve pasture quality is to introduce forest species in silvopastoral arrangements. In the Colombian cold zone, a traditional agroforestry arrangement is Alnus acuminata (Kunth) with the pasture Cenchrus clandestinus (Hochst. ex Chiov.) Morrone, a herbaceous species that covers 80% of the regional forage supply. For this study, the mineral content of C. clandestinus under incidence of A acuminata was evaluated; the research was carried out in the pastures of a silvopastoral arrangement and a monoculture without forest incidence, located in the Obonuco Research Center of Agrosavia. Four treatments and three replicates were e...
