The objective of the study was to asses the susceptibility, pathological effect and serological response of wild pigeons (Columba livia) to Newcastle virus. A total of 28 adult wild pigeons were captured, 14 were inoculated with a velogenic viscerotropic strain of Newcastle virus by oral and nasal route, and the remaining birds were used as a control group. Clinical signs and mortality were recorded. Blood samples were collected for the hemaglutination inhibition technique. Tissue samples from lung and trachea were collected, and cloacal swabs were harvested for virus recovery and histological studies. Birds of the inoculated group showed clinical signs (64%) and mortality (42.8%). The clinical signs (sneezes, ruffled plumage, isolation and lethargy) started at day 4 after inoculation. The 43% of birds showed nervous signs (opisthotonos and tremors of head and neck) and 21% had diarrhea....

The precoloration technique of Walker was assayed in comparation with the classic Giemsa technique as a differential method to Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium malariae, in 208 blood samples of seven Ashaninka communities from Rio Tambo district, Satipo, Junin, Peru. Density of parasites by crossing system (+) and by parasites/mL were higher with precoloration of Walker. The prevalence of the parasites was to P. vivax (24,52%) and P. malariae (0,48%) of all samples assayed. Of the seven communities evaluated from Rio Tambo district: Puerto Ocopa, Unión Puerto Ashaninka and Shimavenzo communities showed the highest prevalence of infection with 42,42%, 27,27% y 27,27% respectively. The ages between 0 to 10 and 41-50 years showed the highest prevalence of infection with 31,30% and 40% respectively. The prevalence of infection was independent with the sex. Density of parasites/mL with both t...

We report robust polarimetric measurements of mixed-state geometric phases. An all-optical setup was used to generate geometric phases with great versatility, thereby extending the scope of analogous methods used in neutron polarimetry. Our method allows us to explore geometric phases generated by unitarily evolving mixed states. These are realized as partially polarized single-photon states whose degree of polarization and normalized Stokes vector can be fixed independently of one another. The geometric phases correspond to both open and closed trajectories in Poincaré space. By exploiting the gauge invariance of geometric phases we nullify their dynamical part, thereby making the geometric phase coincide with the total (Pancharatnam) phase, which can be directly addressed by employing standard techniques.

The effect of two surgical field antisepsis protocols on the reduction of the number of skin bacteria in bovines subjected to field reproductive surgeries was determined. Samples were taken before (M1), and after antisepsis (M2) and at the end of the surgical procedure (M3) in 12 crossbred bovines aged 12 to 24 months. Trichotomy of the operating field was performed prior to the two antisepsis protocols: 7.5% povidone-iodine and 2% Chlorhexidine Gluconate (both with 3-min contact time and 2-min contact clearance with isopropyl alcohol) and later embrocation with 1% povidone-iodine solution and 0.5% chlorhexidine solution, respectively. The skin swabs were processed by the count technique of colony forming units (CFU/ml). The bacterial load of the two protocols was analysed with the Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon test for independent samples, without finding significant differences between protoco...
