Despite the importance of the impacts of the exotic species on the native biodiversity, these have been little studied in South America. In Peru, the information published on the subject is scarce and is many times restricted to gray literature, complicating the analysis of the problem and the wildlife management. In this publication 23 species of vertebrates naturalized in Peru were identified, and the known information on its dispersion in the country, current distribution and impacts on natural environments was summarized. In addition, 8 species that were object of failed intents of introduction to natural environments or whose naturalized populations were extinguished were identified, as well as 10 species of vertebrates whose naturalization is probable but should be verified. This information could be the base for the creation of a research plan on the naturalized vertebrates in Per...

The high diversity of Peruvian carnivore species may pose problems when deciding to which taxa and topics new research efforts should be directed. In this publication, we evaluated the research effort made on each taxa -by assessing the number of publications per species-, point out the knowledge gaps that are important to the conservation of each species and present the first evaluation of research priorities for this group of animals to the country. We registered 145 publications about Peruvian carnivores made since 1943. The number of publications is significantly different between taxa, between subjects and between ecoregions where the research was conducted. According to the proposed priority scale, the species to be studied with greater priority is Nasua olivacea and the lowest priority is for Leopardus pardalis. The results of our study highlight the urgent need to conduct researc...

The mammal fauna of the Parque Nacional Tingo María (PNTM) mainly is known for local people interviews. In this work, using camera traps and its verification by interviews to local people we report medium and large mammals list of the PNTM. Evaluations were realized between December 2014 and November 2018. Sampling effort was of 2970 camera traps/day, with 1640 independent records. Nineteen wild species were recorded, four of which were new reports to the PNTM (the water opossum Chironectes minimus, the margay Leopardus wiedii, the Northern tiger cat Leopardus tigrinus and the crab-eating raccoon Procyon cancrivorus), three were new reports for the Peruvian yungas (L. wiedii, the capybara Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris and the Neotropical otter Lontra longicaudis) and two (H. hydrochaeris and L. wiedii) have been registered as its higher altitude record in Peru. Activity patterns w...

In order to make decisions on the conservation or management of wild species, it is a priority to know their conservation status. For this purpose, the most widely used method is IUCN’s categorization of species according to the level of threat they face, both globally and nationally. In this article we conducted an analysis of threatened plant and vertebrate species, and of data deficient species in the department of Loreto, the largest and one of the most biodiverse in Peru, to identify the main threats they face, identify information gaps, and compare the national and global lists. According to both lists combined, 226 species considered threatened have been recorded in Loreto. Large differences exist between the national and global lists, mainly for plants and fish. The main threat recorded is habitat loss, which affects most of the threatened terrestrial vertebrate species. Large ...

During the first half of the 20th century, a dog breed called Peruvian Pitbull was developed at the Peruvian department of La Libertad. This was reported in an article in 1944 but fell into oblivion, to the point that there are not known later publications available which mention this breed. To verify if there still exist dogs with the Peruvian Pitbull traits and to get data which allow to better describe them, a search was carried on in the area between the former haciendas «Chiclín» and «Salamanca». No specimens of the breed were found but eight out of 52 respondents, provided new data on the history and aspect of this dog. The Peruvian Pitbull would have been ceased to be raised in 1964, being the only reported Peruvian canine breed of modern origin and a culturally valuable element, particularly for the department of La Libertad. The data reported here allows a better knowledge ...

The Allpahuayo Mishana National Reserve, located in the Peruvian Amazon, maintains a great biodiversity but, unlike its plants and most groups of vertebrates, its community of large and medium-sized terrestrial mammals has not been the subject of recent evaluations with direct recording methods, with most of these species reported solely from tracks, interviews, or skins and skulls kept by local hunters. In order to have a current list of land mammals in the touristic area of the reserve, we carried out an evaluation with camera traps between May and October 2021. Additionally, we evaluated the diel activity for the eight species that were recorded most than 10 times. 656 independent records of mammals were obtained, corresponding to 19 species identified at least to the genus level, including 17 with terrestrial habits and two mainly arboreal. Several species reported by other aut...
