El coleccionismo osteológico sucedido entre fines siglo XIX y principios del XX en la provincia de Huarochirí, el cual recuperara grandes cantidades de cráneos prehispánicos de sitios arqueológicos de la provincia, ha impedido estudiar con precisión el contexto temporal y las motivaciones involucradas en la práctica de las trepanaciones craneanas en los Andes centrales. El hallazgo in situ de muchos cráneos trepanados en machay de la Quebrada de Carnacha, cuenca media alta del Rímac, provincia de Huarochirí abre la posibilidad de precisar este estudio. Durante el año 2020 el PIAQC excavó el machay de Mayguayqui, margen izquierda de la quebrada de Carnacha, distrito de San Andrés de Tupicocha, recuperando evidencia en contexto de ejemplares de cráneos trepanados.
