We studied the structural and immunohistochemical aspects of the follicular atresia and interpreted the process of cell death in the ovary of Vanellus chilenis and Himantopus melanurus. We used five female adults of each species at the stage of gonadal recrudescence. The gonads were removed, weighed, fixed and processed with the technique of inclusion in paraffin. The sections were stained with Hematoxylin - Eosin, Trichromic Mallory, Nuclear Reaction Feulgen. The technique TUNEL was employed for marking apoptotic cells. Morfohistologic and quantitative aspects were studied of the ovary of the Fulica armillata during gonadal recrudescence phase. Were used 5 adult females. Morfohistologic analysis revealed the presence of numerous follicles at different stages of development and regression. The simple epithelium of granulosa cells characterized the primary oocytes and the pseudostratified granulosa cells the previtellogenic follicle, both types showed a marked Balbiani body. In the white and yellow vitellogenic follicles > 1 mm evidenced a complex follicular wall formed by the radiated area, stratified follicular epithelium and well-defined thecal enveloped, while the vitellogenic yellow > 3 mm, was observed a simple epithelium with basophilic cuboidal cells. Se estudiaron los aspectos estructurales e inmunohistoquímicos de la atresia folicular en el ovario de Vanellus chilenis e Himantopus melanurus. Fueron utilizadas cinco hembras adultas de cada especie en fase de recrudescencia gonadal; las gónadas se extrajeron, pesaron, fijaron y procesaron con la técnica de inclusión en parafina. Las secciones se colorearon con hematoxilina-eosina, tricrómico de Mallory, reacción nuclear de Feulgen y para la marcación de células apoptóticas se usó la técnica de TUNEL. The annual reproductive cycle of Columbina picui was studied and characterized by a structural and quantitative analysis of the ovary. Adult females were collected in Sierra de Macha (Totoral, Córdoba, Argentina) between the years 2005—2006. During the phase of recrudesence gonadal (June to March), three values maximum were determined, the first one was observed in June as a result of the first oviposition of the subadults (individual with external adult characteristics but vestigial Bursa of Fabricius presence), the remaining values were registered one in September and the other one in January, corresponding that of the mature females. Structural and quantitative variations of the ovary of Patagioenas maculosa were analyzed. Thirty five adult females were captured in Department Río Primero (Córdoba, Argentina), during the reproductive cycle from 2005 -2006. Gonads were removed, weighed and fixed in formalin buffered to pH 7.0 and processed according to the technique of embedding in paraffin. In the most bird, the ovary morphohistological analyses revealed a marked development of the gonad from May to February with 4 -5 yellow vitelogenic follicle ≥ 4 mm and preovulatory follicle. The gonadal weigth increased showing the highest value in September –October,agreed with the morphological characteristic of gonadal recrudescence phase. Con la finalidad de caracterizar el ciclo reproductivo anual de Columbina picui se realizó el análisis estructural y cuantitativo de los ovarios de ejemplares adultos recolectados entre los años 2005—2006 en la Sierra de Macha (Totoral, Córdoba, Argentina). Durante la fase de recrudescencia gonadal (junio a marzo), se determinaron tres valores máximos; el primero en junio, resultado de la ovipostura de las hembras subadultas (plumaje de adultos y vestigios de la Bursa de Fabricius); los restantes valores se registraron uno en septiembre y el otro en enero correspondiendo al de las hembras adultas.
