Death occupied a prominent spot in colonial Lima. Day-to-day violence, the precariousness of life and the constant preachings about the day of judgement were ever-present and contributed to this state of affairs. The proximity of death, whether it be inexorable, or the possibility of being the victim of a sudden death, led people to try to prepare themselves properly for a “good death”, absolutely vital if one wanted to ensure eternal salvation. This would take the form of elaborate ritualism in the funerary rites. In addition, there was an appeal for solidarity between the living and the dead. The deceased would continue to play a role in society, while the living with their prayers could help relieve the tormented of their dear departed. In this way, the line between life and death was not clearly defined.

La pugna política adoptó diversas formas en la independencia, y la iconografía fue una de las más relevantes. Aunque se asumió que el nuevo lenguaje artístico debía ser el neoclásico, su puesta en práctica no estuvo exenta de dificultades, y los modelos coloniales persistieron tanto por la carencia de academia como por su valor persuasivo. A través del análisis de la pieza Alegoría a la muerte de Bolívar, el presente artículo explora cómo se produce esta pugna en un tema elaborado para glorificar al héroe y enmendar la imagen desfavorable que se tenía del político en el Perú al momento de su partida.

This article explores how the Viceroy Count of Superunda built an image of power in the wake of the 1746 earthquake and had painting as a magnificent ally that contributed to consolidate the absolutism of the regime. Faced with the aftermath of the disaster that befell the capital city, he had not only to restore the viceregal power, but also to reestablish the colonial pact, appealing to different converging discourses that would show him as an enlightened ruler and as a protective and magnanimous father. The strong persuasive power of painting played a key role in this.
