The media crisis is linked to the crisis of public institutions. This shows the emergence of social practices focused on user activation and consequently, we can observe a decline of vertical mediation. However, these phenomena do not extend horizontally at a global level. With this study, we compare the results of a survey of more than two thousand university students from Mexico and Ecuador, in which we question the perceptions of these strategic groups about phenomena such as political participation on and offline, and political information consumption.

Digital communication in Ecuador is relatively differentiated particularly as a consequence of the low Internet connection rate in the Andean Republic According to official figures, in 2013 just four out of ten Ecuadorians had network connection. In addition, the communication context is in the middle of an interesting transformation process through the approval of instruments like the Communication Organic Law in 2013, which despite its exhaustive nature it does not regulate the communication contents issued by social network users. This article, through a survey targeted to citizens of two of the main cities of the country -Quito and Riobamba- intends to explore and determine how people living in these urban sites use social networks, and the possible age differences. The results indicate that YouTube, Facebook and Google are the social ...

Interactivity is a factor on which cyber journalism is based and summarizes participation options between a user and the medium, a user with other users, and a user with editors. In this study, we focus on the latter in three countries-Colombia, Peru, and Ecuador-, which have been identified owing to their technological gap and the emerging importance of online communication for their respective societies. Through 35 in-depth interviews with journalists from these countries, we analyzed the concept of interactivity of these professionals and their relationship with users. The results revealed that the journalists positively valued civic contributions as a space for diagnosis, although they do not perceive its informational value, as they relate them to the context of opinions. These results verify the prevalence of journalism as strongly influenced by conventional offline production rout...

Since the last quarter of XX century, the State has been changing with the modernization of public administration and the democratization, which includes as fundamental principles a greater citizen participation in the design, implementation and evaluation of public policies leading to the emergency of governance. Governance is just defined as the process of inclusive government founded on the participation of diverse social, private and public actors in the different stages of planning, implementation and evaluation of public administration and, more comprehensively, of the government. Nevertheless, at present we have found that, in practical terms, the governance contributes to legitimate a political and economic model based on the precepts of neoliberalism. Media literacy, or educommunication, has audiovisual literacy as one of its dimensions. This has always been promoted for application in schools and civil society, however, there are not many studies on its application in the university setting. Therefore, this research aims to study audiovisual literacy applied in communication faculties in Latin America through the teaching of the documentary genre. A qualitative approach was used through semi-structured interviews with teachers from educational institutions in nine countries in the region. The results obtained show that, although curricula do not explicitly address it, teachers and students carry out this literacy at different levels and depths, which is why an initial typology is proposed consisting of audiovisual literacy: by genre, intergeneric, transversal, and instrumental.

Film festivals are places of encounter where different social actors come together, including professionals from the audio-visual industry, students, film buffs, and journalists, as well as the figures who organise these events. The aim of this research is to describe the journalistic coverage of film festivals carried out by the Ibero-American media, which is composed of generalist, traditional, specialised, and digital native outlets. The authors have used a qualitative methodology based on semi-structured interviews with film journalists and festival managers. The most significant findings reveal that each journalist develops their own particular type of frame building to cover an event, which is subject to the informative agenda of the media through which they are commissioned. At the same time, new actors such as influencers have also appeared, who report on the festivals as well. I...
