La guerra anglo-argentina fue, a todas luces, un hecho sorpresivo e inesperado. Incluso, luego de la acción argentina del 2 de abril, era una opinión bastante extendida que "la sangre no llegaría al río". Sin embargo, lo inesperado y para muchos inexplicable, ocurrió. Pero al lado de los acontecimientos militares, que marcaron también algunas sorpresas, hubo en términos políticos un conjunto de actitudes que, fuera del contexto de este conflicto, hubieran sido inexplicables. En América Latina, hemos escuchado a voceros de la derecha y de la alienación a Estados Unidos, criticar al colonialismo y al imperialismo; también hemos visto a gentes de una izquierda que, hasta el 1° de abril, consideraba al régimen militar argentino como una especie de "bestia negra" del fascismo, expresar la más clara y contundente solidaridad con Argentina.

​The author analyzes the international context in which the Persian Gulf War occurred. He points out that it was the first military conflict of importance that happened in the new international order that has arisen after the end of the hegemony of one superpower, hegemony that has replaced the bipolarity arisen after World War II. This fact explains the way in which the conflict was solved.

The article begins with a look at the winning formula in last year's U.S. Presidential elections, in particular at the fact that the victors were two young men who prevailed through the fierce questioning of a generation which, despite being the most prosperous in the United States, still managed to doubt the injustices and failings of their society and their country's foreigns policy. It then gives a brief, historical account of the evolution of the US political system; the rise of the new right and the reaction to it: Clinton's victory. The final part of this study deals with our won situation: our inability to judge the international situation. In addition, the author examines our own historical authoritarian tendency which makes fruitful relations with our northern neighbour more difficult.

El autor analiza el aspecto internacional en el que ocurrió la guerra del Golfo Pérsico. Señala que se trata del primer conflicto bélico de importancia producido en el nuevo orden internacional surgido luego del fin de la Guerra Fría. En esta nueva etapa, el mundo se caracteriza por la hegemonía de una superpotencia, hegemonía que ha reemplazado a la bipolaridad surgida luego de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Esto explica la manera cómo se resolvió el conflicto.

El artículo empieza por referirse a la formula triunfadora en las últimas elecciones de Estados Unidos, destacando el hecho de estar conformada por dos hombres jóvenes que han vivido intensamente los cuestionamientos de una generación que, pese a ser la más próspera de Estados Unidos, fue capaz de cuestionar las injusticias y defectos de la sociedad; así como de cuestionar la política exterior de su país. En el acápite final partimos de nuestra situación: de la incapacidad que existe entre nosotros para evaluar el contexto internacional. Asimismo, nos referimos a nuestra histórica tentación autoritaria que hace más difícil una fructífera relación con el vecino del norte.

The case of sensationalist journalism in Peru is an inreresting topic. We pretend to try to analyze che role of sensationalist journalism -or yellow press- in the developmenr of a mature vision of democratic citizenship. The hypothesis of the author states that yellow press tends to creare individuals lacking a civic sense and a crirical vision subject to sensations and dominated by pressures and immediacy.

This pieces is about the tragic events occurred in Bagua due to thc clash the economic opening and globalization process against the conscrvative ideas that still prevail in a country like Peru, with a scarce and badly distributcd wealth. What triggered the Amazonian drama was the recently passed legislative decree to execute the FTA wirh USA. As soon as the communiry leaders from Bagua learned about, they demanded the revocatían of the USA-Peru FTA decree because thcy thought they would be dispossessed of their lands. Negotiations  only started aftcr conflict exploded, before that there was no dialog at all. This situation establishes that there are differences berween the actual facts and how these are presented in the media.
