Results of a longitudinal prospective study done between 1988 and 1993 to determine the predictive  value in fetal wellbeing of the ultrasound biophysical profile (UBP) created by the first author a represented. The UBP considers seven feto-placental parameters: fetal movements, respiratory movements, fetal tone, basal heart frequency, cardiac reactivity, amniotic fluid volume and placental maturity. We assigned two points to each normal parameter. We performed 1434 studies in high risk pregnancies over 27 week; with presumptive diagnosis of prolonged pregnancy, pregnancy induced hypertension, fetal distress, intrauterine fetal growth retardation, premature rupture of membranes and others.
