Luego de ser saqueado producto de la Guerra del Pacífico, el Cuartel es declarado Monumento Histórico Nacional. No obstante, en 1963 es demolido parcialmente para dar paso a la construcción de la Avenida Nicolás de Piérola. Posteriormente, luego de ser dividido en dos sectores, es demolido el sector sur para la construcción del Establecimiento Penitenciario “San Jorge”. Como proyecto de tesis, se plantea una breve propuesta de regeneración urbana en el entorno inmediato del cuartel de Santa Catalina. Aunque los restos del cuartel que aún está en pie no exceden ni una quinta parte de lo que inicialmente fue este edificio, es de vital importancia dar valor de nuestro patrimonio histórico. Posteriormente, se plantea un Centro Comercial y Oficinas, en el terreno que colinda con los restos del Cuartel de Santa Catalina. El entorno inmediato donde se ubica el proyecto es un área altamente comercial, por lo que el compromiso con el patrimonio y la respuesta a este tipo de zonificación conduce al desarrollo de un complejo arquitectónico con beneficios sociales, culturales, urbanos y económicos.

It was built in 1806 at the disposal of the then viceroy Fernando de Abascal y Souza, to reinforce the security of the capital from the attack of English forces. After being sacked during the War of the Pacific, the barracks was declared a National Historic Monument. However, in 1963 it was partially demolished to make way for the construction of the Avenida Nicolás de Piérola. Later on, after being divided into two sectors, the southern sector was demolished for the construction of the "San Jorge" Penitentiary Establishment. As a thesis project, a brief proposal for urban regeneration in the immediate surroundings of the Santa Catalina barracks is proposed. Although the remains of the barracks that are still standing do not exceed one fifth of what the building originally was, it is vitally important to give value to our historical heritage. Subsequently, a Shopping and Office Centre is proposed on the lot adjacent to the remains of the Santa Catalina Barracks.
