Se llevó a cabo en las instalaciones de la Granja de Animales Menores del Programa de Investigación y Proyección Social en Animales Menores (PIPSAM), de la Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina, durante los meses de enero a marzo de 2018. Se trabajó con 144 cuyes machos mejorados (tipo 1) recién destetados de 14 ± 3 días de edad del genotipo Cieneguilla – UNALM con un peso promedio general de 255g., durante ocho semanas. Se evaluó cuatro tratamientos: 16 cuyes (T1), 12 cuyes (T2), 8 cuyes (T3) los cuales fueron alojados en jaulas y 12 cuyes alojados en poza (T4, testigo); con tres repeticiones en cada uno, manteniendo un área común de 0.1 m2 por animal. Se brindó una dieta mixta (balanceado más forraje) y agua ad libitum a los animales. Para el peso final y ganancias de peso hubo diferencia significativa entre tratamientos criados en jaulas, siendo todos superiores (P<0.05) al tratamiento testigo en pozas; las ganancias semanales y diarias de los tratamientos con 8 y 12 animales por lote en jaula fueron las mejores. Los resultados también muestran diferencias significativas (P<0.05) para el consumo de alimento total, semanal y diario; el mayor consumo lo obtuvo el tratamiento con 16 animales por lote, seguido por los de 12 y 8 cuyes por lote en jaula; no existiendo diferencia entre este último y el testigo, con 12 animales criados en pozas (P<0.05); siendo la mejor conversión alimenticia para el tratamiento con 8 animales por lote. En la evaluación de la carcasa, los tratamientos tuvieron mejores rendimientos con respecto al control (P<0.05) y los tamaños de lote en jaula tuvieron menos lesiones. La retribución y mérito económico, fue similar en jaulas y significativamente mejor con respecto al control en poza.The objective of this study was to evaluate three batch sizes during the growth and fattening stage of guinea pigs housed in metal cages compared to those housed in pools. The study was conducted at the Small Animal Farm facilities of the Research and Social Projection Program on Small Animals (PIPSAM) at the National Agrarian University La Molina, from January to March 2018. A total of 144 recently weaned, improved male guinea pigs (type 1) of 14 ± 3 days of age and of the Cieneguilla – UNALM genotype with a general average weight of 255g were utilized for eight weeks. Four treatments were assessed: 16 guinea pigs (T1), 12 guinea pigs (T2), and 8 guinea pigs (T3) housed in cages, while 12 guinea pigs were housed in a pool (T4, control); with three repetitions for each, maintaining a common area of 0.1 m2 per animal. The animals were provided with a mixed diet (balanced feed plus forage) and water ad libitum. There were significant differences (P<0.05) observed in final weight and weight gains among treatments raised in cages, all of which were superior to the control treatment in pools; the weekly and daily gains of the treatments with 8 and 12 animals per batch in a cage were the highest. The results also indicated significant differences (P<0.05) in total, weekly, and daily food consumption; the highest consumption was observed in the treatment with 16 animals per batch, followed by those with 12 and 8 guinea pigs per batch in a cage. There was no difference between the latter and the control, with 12 animals raised in pools (P<0.05); with the best feed conversion observed in the treatment with 8 animals per batch. Regarding carcass evaluation, the treatments exhibited better yields compared to the control (P<0.05), and the cage batch sizes resulted in fewer lesions.
