Arequipa es la región de mayor producción y principal abastecedora del mercado interno; produjo 451,261 TM, que representó el 57.8 por ciento de la producción nacional (780,471 TM) en el año 2015. Entre 1990 y el año 2015, la superficie cosechada, la producción y el rendimiento se han incrementado a tasas de: 4.01, 6.79 y 2.67 por ciento anual, pasando de una superficie cosechada de 7,460 a 19,944 has; de una producción de 151,050 a 780,471 TM y un rendimiento de 20.25 a 39.14 TM/ha. Este importante desarrollo de la estructura productiva de la cebolla, dada la mejora tecnológica del cultivo, ha permitido incrementar el volumen de las exportaciones y el valor FOB, lográndose exportar 162,553 TM por un valor FOB de US$ 62’687,639 en el año 2015. La mejora de la estructura productiva ha permitido mejorar la estructura comercial externa, ayudada por la apertura comercial del Perú que ha logrado varios Tratados de Libre Comercio durante este periodo, los que se han visto reflejados en el incremento del número de países importadores de cebolla peruana, que llegó a 21 países en el año 2011. El nivel de competitividad de la cebolla amarilla dulce, principal cebolla de exportación peruana, es superior a México y Canadá (principales competidores) en el mercado de EE.UU. Perú, al ser competitivo en precio respecto a México y Canadá, presenta aún ventajas para incrementar su participación en ese mercado. Por todo ello, se concluye que, entre 1990 y el año 2015, ha habido un importante desarrollo de la estructura productiva, económica y comercial externa, que ha colocado al Perú en el noveno lugar dentro del ranking mundial de países exportadores de cebolla (Año 2015).Onion (Allium cepa) is the vegetable that is most sown and produced in Peru. The level of competitiveness of sweet yellow onion, the main Peruvian export onion, is higher than Mexico and Canada (main competitors) in the US market.
