Es deseable mantener la vitalidad pulpar de un diente afectado por una lesión cariosa, lesión traumática u otras injurias. Sin embargo, un diente desvitalizado puede mantenerse clínicamente funcional. El tratamiento pulpar en dentición decidua y en dentición permanente joven es de gran importancia, ya que dependerá de la vitalidad pulpar, por lo tanto su diagnóstico tiene que ser preciso, adecuado y correcto. Lo cual se determinara el estado pulpar o el grado de la inflamación, pulpitis o necrosis, para poder determinar cuál será su debido tratamiento. El tratamiento en la dentición decidua, no es recomendable hacer recubrimiento pulpar directo, está contraindicado, puesto que generalmente se va a producir fracaso del tratamiento por reabsorción interna o absceso dentoalveolar; pero si está indicado el recubrimiento pulpar indirecto y con mayor precisión está indicado la Pulpotomía y la Pulpectomia; estos tratamientos ayudan que la pieza dentaria no se pierde antes de tiempo, y es mantenido en su lugar hasta que llegue el momento natural de su exfoliación y también protegen al diente que está en formación, para que no haya ningún tipo de contaminación con alguna infección. El tratamiento en la dentición permanente, si se recomienda hacer el recubrimiento pulpar ya sea directo e indirecto, porque se va a proteger el complejo dentino pulpar, y estimula la formación de una barrera o puente de dentina reparadora; también se hace tratamientos como la Apicogénesis y Apicoformación, estos tratamientos pulpares ayudan que el diente que ha sido dañado termine su formación, ósea que termine de formarse el ápice, y luego que termine su formación completa se pueda hacer la endodoncia
