Among the notable doctors who participated in both events, the figure of Hermilio Valdizán Medrano, father of Peruvian psychiatry, stands out. Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM), Valdizán actively participated in the academic world of the early twentieth century, promoting major pedagogical reforms, in addition to his work as a publicist and historian. He also stood out in the psychiatric clinic, introducing the teaching and structured evaluation of mental medicine, based on the Peruvian man. Today, we can appreciate the scope of his great vision, as an advanced for his time, because he rescued people with mental disorders and regained the wisdom of our past before contempt. In this article we present, briefly, the life and academic work of Valdizán, in order to strengthen the identity of Peruvian medicine and Psychiatry.En enero de 1918 —hace 100 años—, acontecieron dos hechos de gran importancia para la medicina peruana: la aparición del primer número de los Anales de la Facultad de Medicina y la inauguración del Asilo Colonia de la Magdalena, actualmente conocido como Hospital “Víctor Larco Herrera”. Entre los notables médicos que participaron en ambos sucesos, destaca la figura de Hermilio Valdizán Medrano, padre de la psiquiatría peruana. Graduado en la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM), Valdizán participó activamente en el mundo académico de inicios del siglo XX, promoviendo grandes reformas pedagógicas, además de su trabajo como publicista e historiador. Asimismo, destacó en la clínica psiquiátrica, introduciendo la enseñanza y evaluación estructurada de la medicina mental, con base en el hombre peruano. Actualmente, podemos apreciar el alcance de su gran visión, como un adelantado a su tiempo, pues rescató a las personas con trastornos mentales y recuperó la sabiduría de nuestro pasado ante el desprecio.
