There are several arbitrary translations of the word Titicaca, which is why its search generated confusion due to its departure from Quechua or Aymara. The objective of this research is to determine and explain linguistically the meaning of the word Titicaca. Methodologically, the study is of an explanatory nature, which is based on the review of linguistic and ethnohistorical sources (chronicles), which allow comparison with ethnographic sources based on studies and toponym decoding procedures developed by Cerrón-Palomino (2013, 2020, 2021). The article concludes that the word Titicaca has a Puquine and Quechua filiation, as contemporary research shows; therefore, it is affirmed that titiqaqa means 'rock of the sun'. Thus, the previous postulates about its meaning are discarded. Likewise, according to archaeological and ethnohistorical data, the importance of the island of the sun influenced the puquinas lake to acquire the name of the great divinity that exists there. |

El objetivo de esta investigación es determinar y explicar lingüísticamente el significado de la palabra Titicaca. Metodológicamente, el estudio es de carácter explicativo, el cual se sustenta en la revisión de fuentes lingüísticas y etnohistóricas (crónicas), que permiten compararlas con fuentes etnográficas a partir de estudios y procedimientos de decodificación de topónimos desarrollados por Cerrón-Palomino (2013, 2020, 2021). El artículo concluye que la palabra Titicaca presenta una filiación puquina y quechua, como advierten las indagaciones contemporáneas; por ende, se afirma que titiqaqa significa ‘peñón del sol’. De este modo, se descartan los postulados anteriores sobre su significado. Asimismo, según los datos arqueológicos y etnohistóricos, la importancia de la isla del sol influyó en que el lago de los puquinas adquiera el nombre de la gran divinidad que existe en ella.Existem várias traduções arbitrárias da palavra Titicaca, e é por isso que a busca por ela gerou confusão por causa de sua origem em quíchua ou aymara. O objetivo desta pesquisa é determinar e explicar lingüisticamente o significado da palavra Titicaca. Metodologicamente, o estudo é de natureza explicativa, que se baseia na revisão de fontes lingüísticas e etno-históricas (crônicas), que permitem a comparação com fontes etnográficas baseadas em estudos e procedimentos de decodificação topônima desenvolvidos por Cerrón-Palomino (2013, 2020, 2021). O artigo conclui que a palavra Titicaca tem uma filiação Puquén e Quechua, como mostra a pesquisa contemporânea; portanto, afirma-se que titiqaqa significa 'pedra do sol'. Assim, os postulados anteriores sobre seu significado são descartados.
