After an evaluation of cross-tabulations between poverty and literacy, as well as labor, demographic and educational variables, a logit model was applied to evaluate the probability of an individual falling into poverty as a function of household characteristics and the educational levels of the head of household. Finally, the importance of education was evaluated in a more complete frame of reference; according to the conclusions, it is more important to consider all the individuals that make up the household, rather than only the head of household.El propósito de este trabajo es analizar los factores educacionales y demográficos relacionados con el jefe de hogar y la pobreza, y tratar de explicar la probabilidad de ser pobre. Luego de una evaluación de tablas cruzadas entre pobreza y alfabetismo, así como variables laborales, demográficas y educativas se aplicó un modelo logit para evaluar la probabilidad de que un individuo caiga en condiciones de pobreza como función de las características del hogar y los niveles educacionales del jefe de hogar.
