The instruments were checklists that were validated for study purposes. Result: The level of knowledge about the research competence is lower in private university students (57.1%) but the difference with those of the public university is not significant (U = 341,500; p > 0.05). On the other hand, the level of use of strategies to develop research competence in children by private university students tends to be low (71.4%) and in those of the public university it tends to be high (45.2%), There are significant differences in the level of use of these strategies between both universities (U = 217,000; p> 0.05). Conclusion. The two groups of students have low knowledge of the investigative competence, while public university students use strategies more frequently to develop this competence in children. Classroom management in order to get children to focus on the proposed activities seems to be a variable that influences this difference.Objetivo: Conocer y comparar el conocimiento de la competencia indagatoria y el uso de estrategias para su desarrollo, en estudiantes de educación inicial de dos universidades peruanas. Método: Enfoque cuantitativo, tipo básico, nivel descriptivo-comparativo. La muestra lo constituyó 28 estudiantes del quinto año de la carrea de educación inicial de una universidad pública y otra privada. Los instrumentos fueron listas de cotejo que fueron validadas para propósitos del estudio. Resultado: El nivel de conocimiento sobre la competencia indagatoria es más baja en estudiantes de la universidad privada (57,1%) pero la diferencia con las de la universidad pública no es significativa (U=341.500; p>0.05). Por otro lado, el nivel de uso de estrategias para desarrollar la competencia indagatoria en niños por parte de las estudiantes de la universidad privada tiende a ser baja (71.4%) y en las de la universidad pública tiende a ser alta (45.2%), existiendo diferencias significativas en el nivel de uso de estas estrategias entre ambas universidades (U = 217.000; p >0.05). Conclusión. Los dos grupos de estudiantes tienen bajo conocimiento de la competencia indagatoria, mientras que las estudiantes de la universidad pública utilizan con mayor frecuencia estrategias para desarrollar esta competencia en los niños.
