This article aims to explain the need to plan the tutorial work and institutionalize it as a program, which the university promotes with transversal objectives, from the first to the last university semester. For this to happen there must be a coincidence of concepts and achievements of the entire university community. Different researches confirm that graduated professionals know and demonstrate expertise in their specialty, however, the results are no longer auspicious when it comes to talking about human development and the management of social skills: lack of impulse control, adequate management of conflicts and lack of will development. It means, educated professionals, but people without training. A tutoring program, well articulated and systematized with appropriate topics to the personal needs of the student and the demands that society has on its professionals, will guarantee a complete training for the future professional. In other words, the university will stop being just an academic institution to become a human and integral development institution.La tutoría universitaria es un nuevo servicio que las universidades están ofreciendo a sus estudiantes. No obstante, la realidad nos demuestra que este servicio sigue siendo un intento de ensayo y error, que no pasa de buenas intenciones porque la mayoría de esos intentos no ha cumplido con los objetivos formativos que se plantearon. El presente artículo pretende explicar la necesidad de planificar el trabajo tutorial e institucionalizarlo como un programa, que la universidad promueve con objetivos transversales, desde el primer al último ciclo universitario. Para que esto ocurra debe haber una coincidencia de conceptos y logros de toda la comunidad universitaria. Diversas investigaciones confirman que los profesionales egresados conocen y demuestran experticia en su especialidad, sin embargo, los resultados dejan de ser auspiciosos cuando se tiene que hablar sobre el desarrollo humano y el manejo de habilidades sociales: carecen de control de impulsos, de manejo adecuado de conflictos y falta de desarrollo de la voluntad. Es decir, profesionales instruidos, pero personas sin formación. Un programa de tutoría, bien articulada y sistematizada con temas apropiados a las necesidades personales del estudiante y a las exigencias que la sociedad tiene de sus profesionales, garantizará una formación completa del futuro profesional.
