From the review of historiography, it is possible to determine that the term «lengua sec» has been confusedly attributed to the tallanes, based on a misreading of the chronicle of Antonio de la Calancha by Luis E. Valcárcel, supported by a late work by Clements R. Markham.La delimitación de las diversas lenguas (mochica, sechura, catacaos, colán) que se hablaban en el espacio de la costa norte del Perú se describe bastante bien en la tabla de los idiomas que se hablaban en el obispado de Trujillo incluida en la colección de acuarelas de monseñor Baltasar Jaime Martinez Compañón (1783). Sin embargo, en la región se difundió la idea de que el sec habría sido el idioma propio de toda la región piurana tal como el mochica fue lengua general en la zona de Lambayeque y Pacasmayo hasta el valle de Moche. Fue Clements Markham (1910) quien simplemente lo reconoce como “another language in the northern coast”. La fuente del geógrafo inglés fue fray Antonio de la Calancha y su Crónica moralizada (1638), que ofrecía informaciones algo más detalladas que otros cronistas. Markham presume sin motivo además que en el siglo XIX toda la región conservaba todavía el sec, confundiendo, por esta falsa presunción, a Luis E. Valcárcel (1959 y 1964), quien difunde el error en la intelectualidad peruana. Por ello serán importantes las distinciones practicadas por Zevallos Quiñones (1948) y Ramos de Cox (1950), confirmadas posteriormente por Torero (1986), entre otros. Con todo, son varios autores como Robles Rázuri (1976), Albán Ramos (1985) o Juan José Vega (1993) entre otros, quienes van a mantener la posición de Valcárcel, para apoyar la identidad regional en un supuesto pasado tallán unido y cohesionado por la lengua sec.
