The use of topical anesthesia on oral mucosa can reduce the perception of pain, improving the relationship between the child and the professional. Objective: The objective of the study, was to realize a literature review, about the topical anesthetics most used in pediatric dentistry. Methodology: An information search was count from June 2019 to January 2020 about topical anesthetics used in pediatric dentistry using the platforms: EBSCO, Scielo, Pubmed, Cochrane and Google Scholar, using the key words: dental topical anesthetic, pediatric dentistry, benzocaine. topical, topical lidocaine, EMLA, PLO4%. Results: The initial bibliographic search gave 1733 studies, the information obtained was reviewed considering 19 eligible studies. Conclusions: The most commonly used topical anesthetics in pediatric dentistry according to the literature review were lidocaine and benzocaine. The most used presentations were cream, gel, spray and patches. Its main uses were in oral traumas, before clamping, in extractions of primary teeth with mobility and before infiltration of local anesthesia. No cases of adverse effects were reported in this literature review.Introducción: El abordaje del dolor durante una cita odontológica es un desafío al que se enfrentan constantemente los odontopediatras, especialmente durante procedimientos que requieren de colocación de anestesia dental local. La aplicación de anestesia tópica sobre mucosa oral puede disminuir la percepción del dolor, mejorando la relación entre el niño y el profesional. Objetivo: El objetivo del estudio fue realizar una revisión de literatura sobre los anestésicos tópicos más utilizados en odontopediatría. Metodología: Se realizó una búsqueda de información desde junio del 2019 hasta enero del 2020 sobre los anestésicos tópicos utilizados en odontopediatría empleando las plataformas: EBSCO, Scielo, Pubmed, Cochrane y Google Académico, utilizando los términos: dental topical anesthetic, pediatric dentistry, benzocaine topical, lidocaine topical, EMLA, PLO4%. Resultados: La búsqueda bibliográfica inicial arrojó 1733 estudios, se revisó la información obtenida considerando elegibles 19 estudios. Conclusiones: Los anestésicos tópicos más utilizados en odontopediatría fueron la lidocaína y la benzocaína. Las presentaciones más empleadas fueron en crema, gel, spray y parche. Sus principales usos fueron en traumas orales, antes de la colocación de clamp, en extracciones de piezas deciduas móviles y previamente a la infiltración de anestesia local.
