This generates knowledge through market research, competitor analysis, and technological trend identification, among others, which enables companies to make informed decisions. Technology watch is one of the five functions that comprise the management model of the Mexican National Technology and Innovation Award, which also includes planning, enablement, protection, and implementation.The objective of this research is to analyze the technology watch activities and practices carried out by food SMEs in the region, and based on this, to understand the impact of technology watch on these companies. This study conducted direct research through surveys applied to food SMEs and desk research on the topic. The research concludes that technology watch has contributed to solving market needs, identifying technological development projects, and improving strategic and technological planning in this type of company. Las pequeñas y medianas empresas (pymes) de la industria alimentaria de la zona metropolitana del valle de México (ZMVM) utilizan la vigilancia tecnológica para la recopilación y análisis sistemático de información de diversas fuentes, con lo que generan conocimiento a través de estudios de mercado, competencia y tendencias tecnológicas, entre otros, que sirve a las empresas para tomar decisiones de manera informada. La vigilancia tecnológica es una de las cinco funciones que componen el modelo de gestión del Premio Nacional de Tecnología e Innovación de México (PNTi), el cual también suma a la planeación, habilitación, protección e implantación.El objetivo de la presente investigación es analizar las actividades y prácticas de vigilancia tecnológica que realizan las pymes alimentarias de la región y, con base en ello, conocer el impacto de la vigilancia en estas empresas. El trabajo se llevó a cabo haciendo investigación directa, con la aplicación de encuestas a pymes alimentarias, e investigación de gabinete sobre el tema de estudio. En el trabajo se concluye que la vigilancia tecnológica contribuyó a solucionar necesidades del mercado, a identificar proyectos de desarrollo tecnológico y a mejorar la planificación estratégica y tecnológica en este tipo de empresas.
