Describimos la gran depresión por la que atravesó el Perú durante las décadas de 1970 y 1980 y analizamos las posibles hipótesis que pueden explicar el profundo colapso y la lenta recuperación que tuvo la economía peruana. La conclusión principal de este trabajo es que difícilmente puede hallarse una explicación única para la gran depresión que sufrió el Perú. Tal como ocurre en una tormenta perfecta, fueron tantas las cosas que salieron mal al mismo tiempo que los efectos de cada choque negativo fueron amplificando los de otros choques. Nuestros resultados sugieren que los choques externos que golpearon al país en la década de 1980 fueron amplificados por un sistema político débil y fragmentado, una limitada capacidad empresarial y la falta de una política industrial coherente que podría promover el descubrimiento de nuevas actividades productivas.

Based on the theorical framework that considers contextual and structural long-term perspectives of world hegemonic cycles and transitions of global powers, the aim of this reading is to critically analyze the ongoing and potential impact of the pandemic in the light of a conjunctural and historical perspective.
