Walking through the streets of the center of Santiago de Chile after the social revolt of October 2019, one can see the mural interventions that commemorate and denounce state violence, confronting the government's silence and censorship on the human rights violations during those months. Among these, it is not uncommon to see urban art that refers to consumer culture, especially Japanese animation series (anime) and manga (Japanese comics) made by organizations such as Otaku Antifascista or Tatakae Chile. However, the phenomenon draws attention because it is replicated not only in the context of the protest in Chile but also in countries like Peru and Bolivia, where anime fans, widely known as otakus, build a new language of social protest. This essay reflects on this articulation, evaluating the spatial displacement of the otaku referent from its consumption in private (closed) spaces ...

The transversality of environmental law as a foundation against the criminalization of social protests, means that environmental law as a human right is characterized by its transversality, that is, that its values and principles radiate throughout our national legal system with the purpose of That man, as the supreme goal of society and the State, achieves and enjoys his fundamental right to sustainable development to meet his basic needs, therefore, it is a right for him to protect every citizen -when he is at risk or was violated-, through social protest, understood as constitutional law, when the government does not respond to its claims. The intersection between the transversality of environmental law and the criminalization of social protests is a complex context to address it because its causes lie not only in neoliberalism and the imposition of economic projects but also in the w...

In the context of virtual communication systems, the new rationale of social participation and the mechanisms used for the appropriation of the resources, contents and meanings that are broadcast through telematic networks are analyzed here from a political anthropology viewpoint. A case study is used in this paper to highlight how a globalized protest is developed against the presentation of a South American soap opera, La Tormenta (The Storm), which was broadcast on the Internet. Users’ capacity for action to convert the Network into ameans of organization and critique and collectively react against the power of the media is analyzed here. This political action went beyond the virtual field to the real world, thus allowing the recognition of rights. This uprise in the network of consumers of cultural products has contributed to transform conventional mechanisms of citizen participati...

The aim of this article is to analyses the theory of non-executive co-authorship and its viability as a criminal charge for leaders of social protests for crimes originating in this context. For this, a review of national and international jurisprudence and doctrine on the theory of non-executive co-authorship is carried out in order to show what concept of this figure is compatible with the traditional foundations of co-authorship. This, to then show when its application is possible, considering its dogmatic approaches and a human rights approach, in protest. In this regard, it is argued that it can only be charged under this title if there is sufficient evidence that shows that the social leader, under a common plan, participated in an essential and remote way in the executive phase of the attributed crime.

This article is a qualitative study on feminist movements in Mexico and their transformations in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic based on communicative practices in social network sites. Its purpose is to learn about the challenges, changes and communicative strategies employed in the face of the confinement, which limited the use of public space for feminist protest and accompaniment of women victims of violence. It also presents a theoretical discussion on social movements and feminist collective action in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic (Della Porta, 2020b; Pleyers, 2021; Tabbush, 2021). The results show significant changes in their communicative strategies in social network sites and an increase in emotional exhaustion, given the confinement imposed by the health contingency; however, the use of local initiatives shows a hopeful perspective of retaking the streets in the fu...

This paper aims to analyze the spelling regulations implemented by Facebook and Twitter users during the national strikes of 2019 and 2021 in Colombia. From a glotopolitical perspective, the study identifies the discursive constructions associated with spelling adequacy in virtual interventions (comments and posts) as well as in public spaces (graffiti) within the context of these social movements. The topoï that support these discourses are located, and the argumentative strategies employed by individuals in their publications are highlighted. The analysis focuses on the underlying ideologemes of these interventions and reveals that both proponents and opponents of the strikes share conservative perspectives regarding spelling, often linking it to factors such as education level, intelligence, and criminality. Finally, the research uncovers a relationship between the unrestricted surve...

For decades, Cajamarca has housed one of the most productive gold mines in the world. Between 1992, when the operations of the Yanacocha deposits began, until 2011, when the most important expansion project of the operating company was suspended, extractive activities have been a source of controversy. Only between 2004 and 2011 three conflicts reached national relevance in Cajamarca: Quilish (2004), Combayo (2006) and Minas Conga (2011). This continuum allows analyzing different types of «responses» —especially from rural areas— to mining. The article proposes that the peasant responses have been oriented to the negotiation of benefits that compensate the affectation of natural resources and allow the localities to accede, albeit in an indirect and limited way, to the profits produced by the industry. However, when the agreements reached wit...

In this article, I follow the discourses elaborated around música latinoamericana («Latin American music»), a broad musical category encompassing a wide range of Latin American —but especially Andean— folk genres within successive, interrelated «cultural projects». I examine the extra-musical meanings attributed to this stylistic mode in the nueva canción (new song) movements of protest music in the Southern Cone, the transnational nueva canción latinoamericana (Latin American New Song) network to which they gave rise, and ultimately focus on música latinoamericana’s development in Colombia. During the mid 1970s, the initial Colombian practitioners of música latinoamericana adopted several facets of the discourse pertaining to this music —along with the musical models themselves— from nueva canción latinoamericana. However, they later reined claims about the styl...

This article addresses the processes of interpretation in the public sphere about the 2013 National Agrarian Strike in Colombia, and especially the way in which the protesters were considered authentic and legitimate. Based on a cultural sociology approach, it argues that two symbolic processes contributed to the generation of social solidarity towards the peasantry during the strike. First, the transitional context derived from the peace talks between the government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) was discursively articulated in support of the protest. Second, there was a process of symbolic coalition around the idea of the peasant as a primordial and victimized identity that gathered the support of multiple social sectors. As a result of these processes, a codification of the strike and its protagonists as legitimate and authentic was positioned in the public sphe...
