For decades, Cajamarca has housed one of the most productive gold mines in the world. Between 1992, when the operations of the Yanacocha deposits began, until 2011, when the most important expansion project of the operating company was suspended, extractive activities have been a source of controversy. Only between 2004 and 2011 three conflicts reached national relevance in Cajamarca: Quilish (2004), Combayo (2006) and Minas Conga (2011). This continuum allows analyzing different types of «responses» —especially from rural areas— to mining. Durante la década pasada, Latinoamérica experimentó un acelerado crecimiento económico producto del boom de los recursos naturales. La alta demanda de metales generada por los países asiáticos, especialmente por parte de China, incrementó los precios a tasas sin precedentes. Por ejemplo, el precio del cobre, que hasta 2003 se encontraba debajo de 1 dólar por libra, superó los tres dólares la libra en 2006 y se disparó a 4 dólares el 2011 (Monaldi, 2014:6). El positivo ciclo económico incrementó significativamente los ingresos de los estados, permitió a sus gobiernos ampliar las políticas sociales y, en la mayoría de los casos, propició altos niveles de aprobación para los presidentes en funciones (Levitsky y Loxton, 2013).
