Raising awareness about the environmental risks faced by the Historical Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, providing tools for thinking that will contribute to addressing the Sanctuary’s problems,and finally, contributing to the debate by forwarding a proposal for the Sanctuary’s sustainable management are the purposes of this study. In the first section, statistics show Peru is basically a unipolar travel destination. The second section presents the complex problems identified at the Sanctuary. To conclude, the study presents a proposed solution, including setting up a structure tomanage the Sanctuary’s strategic planning while abiding by the key principles of sustainable development.

The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, an element of the tangible historical heritage of Peru, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, is undoubtedly one of the main tourist attractions in South America; which supports high tourist pressure, saturation problems and risk of impact on its conservation. In the present work, an audit of the level of quality in the tourist management of the site is carried out using the Delphi method. The towns of Urubamba , Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu Cusco department suffer the problems of environmental sanitation by disposal of solid waste without technical criteria . Furthermore, the existence of collection points converted into garbage dumps that are distributed in the marginal urban and urban area of these cities , causing the deterioration of air, water and soil and the risk to the health of people . In order to overcome the environmental problems in the management of solid waste , local authorities proposed areas where they can build a landfill to benefit the three cities located near Yuncacha Huayco sector in the district of Maras, and in Algarrubillo in the district of Ollantaytambo. A nivel mundial, el turismo crece en promedio al 7% y particularmente en Sudamérica, al 8% a pesar de los constantes cambios macroeconómicos y problemas políticos. En el Perú, el turismo ha venido creciendo en forma constante, aunque con cierta desaceleración en los últimos años debido a ineficiencias en la promoción e inactividad en el desarrollo de productos turísticos, llegando alrededor del 7%, aun sin mucho esfuerzo.
