Assemblies represent an essential element in the indigenous justice of the communities in Oaxaca. In these types of gatherings, the community becomes a collective judicial body in order to address a violation of its normative system. What is their nature? How do they function? What notable elements do they incorporate in their development? This study aims to provide an approach to these questions through the tools of discourse analysis and studies on orality. To achieve its goal, it is divided into four sections: the first analyzes the typology, nature and status of indigenous justice assemblies; while the following sections focus on examining their procedural, discursive and oral dynamics.

The war in Ukraine has grabbed headlines around the world. This analysis asks who is covering it and what this says about war reporting. The advent of the Web and the subsequent polarization of the media pits the constant demand for information against the journalistic expectation of calm analysis. While traditional media seem to guarantee credibility, more and more people are turning to alternative information providers. To explore these changes’ repercussions on war correspondents, this study analyzes 11,268 bylines of the news on Ukraine published digitally by the most widely read newspapers in Spain (El País, El Mundo, El Correo, and La Vanguardia) and the USA (The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today and New York Post), during the first week of the conflict, from February 24 to March 2, 2022. Through these, the authors’ working relationship with each newspaper is ...

The author aims to address the question of whether law is an honorable profession by analyzing the relationship between lawyer and client and the moral dilemmas that lawyers may face in the exercise of their profession. In this context, it addresses three difficult scenarios that may arise in the course of a career: (i) Can the lawyer discredit a witness who is telling the truth? (ii) Can the lawyer offer a witness who is lying? (iii) Can the lawyer defend a client whom the lawyer knows is guilty? While recognizing the importance of loyalty and confidentiality between the lawyer and his client, it is emphasized that lawyers are primarily responsible to the law and the judiciary. In this regard, the author notes that lawyers have a duty to their clients, but that duty is subordinate to a higher duty associated with the proper administration of justice, respect for the law, and the truth.

In the standard manuscript of the Laws —the Parisinus Graecus 1807 of the 9th Century AD— this dialogue is placed between the Minos and the Epinomis. While in the Minos the pupil refers to the diversity of rites and traditions that can be observed amongst different peoples, the Epinomis stresses the unity of the law. The regulation of symposia, the access to drugs, to intoxicating drinks and to medicine is a fundamental theme of the Laws. This is evident already from the composition of the dialogue, since this theme is discussed in its first books. The art of regulating communal life is shown as a technique that can be perfected through dialogue. Communal drinking can be beneficial, says the anonymous Athenian foreigner, since wine encourages citizens to sing, and through the confrontation with pleasure citizens are able to exercise temperance. Since the consumption of wine may also ...
