This work would not have been possible without the work of all the plant collectors and herbarium curators (AAU, COL, CUZ, F, GOET, MERF, MO, NY, US, USM, VEN, and Z/ZH) who made specimens (physical or digital) available for study. We thank Katya Romoleroux and one anonymous reviewer who have improved the manuscript with their suggestions and helpful comments. HRQM thanks Vladimir Camel, Wendy Navarro, and Fressia Ames for their support during field work. We thank the Servicio Nacional Forestal y de Fauna Silvestre for providing research authorizations under the R.D.G. No 233-2015, No 237-2015, No 037-2017-SERFOR/DGGSPFFS. TEBEs work was funded by FONDECYTCONCYTEC (No227-2014-FONDECYT). HRQMs work was possible thanks to grant CONCYTEC, Project 149-2015-FONDECYT-DE.

The taxonomically difficult genus Polylepis (Rosaceae) contains several problematic species complexes, including one around P. sericea. We here reevaluate species boundaries in this complex based on morphological characters and climatic niches. We recognize five species within the P. sericea complex, based primarily on leaf characters: P. albicans (northwestern Peru), P. argentea (central Peru) described here, P. canoi (southeastern Peru to central Bolivia), P. ochreata (Ecuador to southernmost Colombia), and P. sericea (Venezuela to central Colombia). We provide full synonymy, diagnostic notes, lists of selected specimens examined, and a key to the species of the complex.

In the following study, allometric equations have been generated to estimate the aerial forest biomass of two species: Polylepis incana and Polylepis sericea, from an Andean natural forest located in the village of Poccrac, in the heights of Ticapampa, Ancash. The allometric equations for both species have been designed from 15 data, relating the biomass (M) as a dependent variable with the diameter of breast height as an independent variable (DAP). The DAP measurement of the selected Polylepis trees are within the range of 5 cm to 20 cm. In the regression analysis performed with the statistical program SPSS V 22.0, a correlation coefficient of r2 = 0.929 is found for the Polylepis incana species and a r2 = 0.94 for the Polylepis sericea species, which indicates a high relation between the biomass variables and DAP, showing good goodness of fit for the parameters that constitute the allom...

Seed physiological quality is usually determined by the interaction between genetics and the mother tree’s environment, as well as by intrinsic characteristics, such as seed mass. In the Andean highlands, massive sapling production for forest restoration projects is constrained by seed availability and quality. There, species of the genus Polylepis dominate the remnant forests. The associations of seed viability with seed mass and maternal effects were evaluated in P. flavipila, a threatened tree species endemic to the Peruvian Andes. The characteristics and environments of 18 mother trees from two sites were measured, and seed quality was assessed in three tests. Seed mass was 3.49 ± 1.76 mg (range: 0.5–16 mg) and showed the greatest variability within mother trees, followed by variability among trees and among sites. Viability rates, standard germination and greenhouse germination...
