Understanding how the physiological processes of trees are affected by the environment or silvicultural practices is important for forest management, which requires process-based models. It enables the evaluation of the growth of a forest under different scenarios. The 3-PG model has been widely used all over the world, justified by its simplicity and efficiency, as it uses a more accessible language and fewer parameters than other process-based models. It is a model of greatest interest for forest management because it enables the use of allometric equations to calculate variables of interest in this area, such as the average diameter at 1.30 m height (DBH), total height and stand volume. The 3-PG parameterization is essential to guarantee the model's good performance; however, in some cases, when observed data are not available, values from the literature is used or calibration is perf...

From data of USA, Japan, Germany, UK, Italy and Russian, it is claimed that the Global pandemic dictated by the dynamics of Corona virus exhibits distributions that would correspond to a morphology of Bessel-like type. Under the assumption that the pandemic contains phases of infection denoted by the velocity and acceleration of propagation of virus, then a model of polynomials given by the integer-order Bessel functions is proposed. These polynomials enter in a statistical approach to define the law of infections as function of time for the ongoing global pandemic. From this, the data evolution and their different behaviors are interpreted in terms of the different phases including the Delta variant for the recent months until August 2021.

The present study explores the cloud microphysics (MPs) impact on the simulation of two convective rainfall events (CREs) over the complex topography of Andes mountains, using the Weather Research and Forecasting- Advanced Research (WRF-ARW) model. The events occurred on December 29 2015 (CRE1) and January 7 2016 (CRE2). Six microphysical parameterizations (MPPs) (Thompson, WSM6, Morrison, Goddard, Milbrandt and Lin) were tested, which had been previously applied in complex orography areas. The one-way nesting technique was applied to four domains, with horizontal resolutions of 18, 6, and 3 km for the outer ones, in which cumulus and MP parameterizations were applied, while for the innermost domain, with a resolution of 0.75 km, only MP parameterization was used. It was integrated for 36 h with National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP Final Operational Global Analysis (NFL) i...

A sensitivity study of the performance of the Weather Research and Forecasting regional model (WRF, version 3.7) to the use of different microphysics, cumulus, and boundary layer parameterizations for short- and medium-term precipitation forecast is conducted in the Central Andes of Peru. Lin-Purdué, Thompson, and Morrison microphysics schemes were tested, as well as the Grell–Freitas, Grell 3d, and Betts–Miller–Janjic cumulus parameterizations. The tested boundary layer schemes were the Yonsei University and Mellor–Yamada–Janjic. A control configuration was defined, using the Thompson, Grell–Freitas, and Yonsei University schemes, and a set of numerical experiments is made, using different combinations of parameterizations. Data from 19 local meteorological stations and regional and global gridded were used for verification. It was concluded that all the configurations over...

The study evaluated the sensitivity of the precipitation forecast in the central Andes of Peru of Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to change the planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes. In that region is located the Mantaro basin, which is one of the most important in the region. Here, the rainfall is very important to the agriculture and to the reserves of drinking water. The simulations were carried out with ten PBL schemes for 19 days in January, February, and March, between 2009 and 2012. Based on the statistical analysis (model vs. observation), the more efficient schemes were determined and analyses of the vertical profiles of some variables are shown. As a result, the schemes that most helped the model in rainfall forecasting were MYNN3 (general and north sector of the basin), Bou-Lac (central sector) and Bretherton-Park (southern sector). The model generally overestima...

In this work, using the Laplace invariants theory we give other proof for the following result: A proper Dupin hypersurfaces Mn for n ≥ 4 in Rn+1 with n distinct principal curvatures andconstant mobius curvature, cannot be parametrized by lines of curvature. Also, we study special classes of hypersurfaces Mn; n ≥ 3; in Rn+1, parametrized by lines of curvature with n distinct principal curvatures and we obtain a geometric relation when the Laplace invariants are vanish, we show that the foliations of Mn are umbilical hypersurfaces if and only if mijk = 0. Moreover, the foliations of Mn are Dupin hypersurfaces if and only if mij = 0.

In nature, vibrissae are tactile hairs of mammals used as sensor elements for the exploring the surrounding area. These hairs, also known as whiskers, can be found in different locations on an animals body. Mystacial vibrissae are distributed over a whiskerpad on a muzzle. Carpal vibrissae are located on the downside aspect of the forelimbs of mammals. The vibrissal hair has a conical shape and grows from a special heavily innervated hair follicle incorporating a capsule of blood. As the hair itself has no receptors along its length, the vibrissa may be considered as a system for transmitting forces and torques that arise from the contact between the hair and an object to sensory receptors inside the follicle. The present thesis deals with the vibrational motion of vibrissae dur- ing natural exploratory behaviour from the mechanical point of view. The phenomenon of the parametric resonan...

The control of the Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) of light in quantum optical system can provide an additional degree of freedom, that can enable many applications in quantum mechanics and optical communications. Lasers beams with OAM (optical vortices) are generally described by Laguerre-Gaussian modes, which have a doughnut intensity distribution with phase singularities in the wavefront. In the special case of first order OAM modes, the Poincaré sphere gives a convenient geometrical representation of those optical vortices. Following the theoretical proposal done by B.Coutinho dos Santos et. al in 2007, in this project we are interested in studying experimentally the dynamics of an Optical Parametric Oscillator under the injection of a seed beam with OAM. The main aim of this project is to characterize the OAM conservation in the twin beams, namely signal and idler, coming from the i...

In this work, a non-parametric and deterministic approach based on multidirectional efficiency analysis (MEA) is presented. The proposed model involves MEA with other important mathematical techniques in data analysis, such as the calculation of the NC value for the analysis of groups with different levels of efficiency. This model allows us to examine the factors that influence the behavior of decision-making units in different contexts such as business efficiency, educational quality, energy efficiency, circular economy, among others. Particularly in this work, we show the results obtained in 1787 Portuguese companies in the materials manufacturing sector (manufacture of wood and paper; manufacture of rubber products, plastics and other non-metallic mineral products; manufacture of common metals and metallic products, except machinery and equipment) in an eight-year period (2006-2013) ...

Conventional efficiency evaluation systems present little diversity in the type of variables considered. This aspect generally leads to errors in the application of the models and in the corresponding interpretation of results. This study proposes a dynamic model to measure the efficiency of decision-making units, based on non-parametric Multidirectional Efficiency Analysis (MEA). The model presented here considers a complete structure, which includes intertemporal variables (desirable/undesirable intermediate inputs and outputs), discretionary/non-discretionary inputs; desirable/undesirable inputs and outputs. Dynamic score is defined first in a particular version and then in a more general version, considering two optimization problems. The directional contribution of each variable is examined, showing excess inputs and deficit outputs. In addition, a dynamic inefficiency index to meas...

Based on the work of Brandt et al. (2009), we formulate an index tracking and enhanced indexation model using a parametric approach. The portfolio weights are modeled as functions of assets characteristics and similarity measures of the assets with the index to track. This approach permits handling non-linear and nonconvex objectives functions that are difficult to incorporate in existing index tracking and enhanced indexation models. Additionally, this approach gives the investor more information about the portfolio holdings since the optimization is performed over portfolio strategies. Finally, an empirical implementation and an analysis of selected characteristics are presented for the S&P500 index.

Silos are vulnerable structures during severe seismic events due to their slenderness and their interaction with stored material. This investigation presents the results of a special structure that incorporates a basal seismic isolation system, such as the Triple Friction Pendulum System (TFPS). A parametric study was conducted on eight models of reinforced concrete silos to evaluate the effectiveness of TFPS isolators in mitigating the effects of various parameters on their seismic response. This research makes significant contributions by identifying parameters that affect isolated silos, providing valuable insights into their seismic behaviour. The silos were modeled and validated by comparing the forces obtained from a modal spectral analysis with analytical forces from a previous study, achieving acceptable errors for the research objectives. Finally, a nonlinear dynamic time histor...

By studying María y los niños pobres (2010), a petit bourgeois artisanal feature film directed by the Peruvian filmmaker Leonidas Zegarra (02/02/1949-12/29/2020), within the theoretical framework of the parametric narration developed by Noël Burch and David Bordwell, it is provable that it has an original film form as a flow of filmtechniques because the organization of its parameters don’t resemble other movies, considering what is known today. Additionally, within the sociological frameworkdeveloped by Pierre Bourdieu, it is demonstrable with historical examples that the artists and intellectuals who decide to support formal innovation in filmmaking, attitude related to the practice known as “aesthetic distancing”, do it struggling against the “popular aesthetic” that the industrial production ruling the market uses as a basis to manufacture standardized forms that pretend...

This study estimates the economic costs of mining pollution on water resources for the years 2008 and 2009 based on the conceptual framework of Environmental Efficiency. This framework identifies such costs as the mining companies’ trade-off between increasing production that is saleable at market prices (desirable output) and reducing the environmental pollution that emerges from the production process (undesirable output). These economic costs were calculated from parametric and non parametric production possibility frontiers for 28 and 37 mining units in 2008 and 2009, respectively, which were under the purview of the National Campaign for Environmental Monitoring of Effluent and Water Resources, conducted by the Energy and Mining Investment Supervisory Agency (Osinergmin) in those years. The results show that the economic cost of mining pollution on water resources rose to U.S. $ 8...
