A thorough reading of Manera de galardón. Merced pecuniaria y extranjería en el siglo XVII, by Victoria Sandoval Parra, allows the debate on some current issues of the monarchy of Spain linked to international historiography: pecuniary royal grants, foreignness and the power of the highest ruler of the empire, the king. Likewise, the book also allows the discussion about the economic-administrative crisis of the Austrian regime and its alternating and dichotomous management of peripheral provinces, between decentralization and centralization.

The new geopolitical order that emerged in Europe in 1919 after the end of World War I was accompanied by the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, the liquidation of all its institutions and the subsequent creation of new ones in accordance with the new Republic of Austria. One of the most complex liquidation processes was that of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, given that the monarchy had more than five hundred representations around the world and that it was not just a matter of declaring that it had ceased to exist as a political and governmental body. Contemporary documentation stored in the Austrian National Archives makes it possible to take the liquidation of the Austro-Hungarian missions in Argentina, Chile and Peru as an example and to show what it meant to organise the administrative dismantling of these missions, and the feelings of ambiguity faced by the imperial re...

This paper discusses, from a transnational point of view, the historical context that led Philip IV to decree a total prohibition of trade between the viceroyalties of New Spain and Peru in 1634. It revisits the discussion among diverse figures and institutions across the Empire, taking into consideration the complex domestic and international developments in the previous years; and, in this light, ponders to what extent Imperial Spain was a polycentric monarchy.

In recent years, the court has been a relevant topic in historiography. When we refer to the court as a space that is political, artistic, financial, etc., we should not only think of the court par excellence, that of the king, but also of the other distinct spheres made up of nobles, ecclesiastics and illustrious members of the common folk, who formed centers of scholarly discussion and power and exercised a political, religious, cultural and economic role in the territory. In the Indies, different courts were juxtaposed with each other, but researchers have tended to focus on viceregal courts. In these courts, the highest monarchical office was executed: the viceroy acted as the link between the monarch and his American vassals, and as an impressive focal point for groups that composed the sociopolitical framework of the viceroyalties. The court was the most prestigious center in which...

The agricultural and political history of the province of Paita during the 19th century is still under academic study. San Lucas de Colán stands out in the coastal strip and currently lacks sociological research that studies its spatial formation, dynamics of land ownership, and regional political events. We take Peru’s bicentennial objectives as a framework to produce sociology and regional history knowledge. Also, we present a context to study several social actors providing information about the historical progress of a northern valley and rural population center during a viceregal Bourbon time that is transforming due to the complex processes for building a national republican state. We systematize ethnographic data by René Lesson. He was a French doctor and naturalist that arrived by chance at Colán beaches to collect botanical and zoological information. In addition, he report...

Argentina established diplomatic relations with the Gulf monarchies—Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman—decades ago. However, these relations only gained significant depth starting with the second government of the Frente Para la Victoria (FPV). The guiding question of this research is: ¿how have Argentina’s ties with the Gulf monarchies evolved during Alberto Fernández’s administration (2019-2023)? In seeking to answer this question, the study aims to: describe the course of relations with these six countries during the period under review, identify the key actors driving these ties, examine their objectives, and finally, analyze the internal and external factors that have shaped the trajectory of these relationships. Methodologically, the research is based on a qualitative approach, relying on d...
