description The objective of the article has two main goals. On one hand, we want to study US hegemony in the East Asia; how it proceeded there and challenges posed by other international powers. US hegemony in Asia was resolutely established after the victory over Japan in 1945. Nevertheless since the rise of the Chinese economic power and its role now as second world economic power the US ispassing from the Japanese containment to a Chinese containment, adopting trade and military strategies to achieve this objective. In the second part of the article Chinese economic penetration to Latin America is going to be reviewed and if it is representing a hegemonic challenge to the US supremacy which is adopting new trading policies as complementary tool after the FTAA failed into the region in order to maintain its hegemony. Finally, the article offers concluding remarks with specific characteristics on how hegemonic competence is carried out and consequences in both regions, Asia and Latin America.

Por una parte, realiza un análisis de largo alcance sobre los cambios y las principales estrategias que implementaron los Estados Unidos para asentar su hegemonía en el Este de Asia, que quedó firmemente establecida después de la victoria sobre Japón en 1945. Sin embargo, desde hace por lo menos una década el ascenso de China es sorprendente, convirtiéndose recientemente en la segunda potencia mundial y en el eje económico de Asia. Los Estados Unidos han pasado, en esta región, de una política de contención del poder japonés a una de contención del ascenso chino implementando políticas comerciales y militares para lograr este objetivo. En la segunda parte del artículo, se hace el análisis de la penetración económica de China en América Latina, que se ha dado por varios caminos, y si realmente representa un desafío al dominio de los Estados Unidos en la región, que a su vez también ha desplegado estrategias de carácter comercial concomitantemente al fracaso del ALCA, para lograr mantener su dominio histórico en la región.
