Sumario: | Background: Inhaled therapy has proved to be the most accurate way to control the symptoms of Asthma and COPD. The most commonly delivery system used to control these diseases is the MDI. The primary endpoint of this study is to show the association between an inappropriate inhalatory technique and age. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, performed at Centro Médico Naval “Cirujano Mayor Santiago Távara”, in Callao, Peru, in 2014. Patients ≥18 years old that used MDI were included, in our non-probability sampling by convenience. The main variables were age and incorrect practical inhalation technique, according to the guidelines on the correct use of inhalers of the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR).The results were analyzed with the Chi² test for bivariate analysis and for multivariate, the Poisson regression with Robust variance. Results: 378 patients were included in the analysis. Among these, 167 were over 60 years old. Association was found between incorrect inhalatory technique and age (p=0,014) (PR 1,19 95% CI 1,03 to 1,37).. The highest prevalence of incorrect technique was found in the young adult population (88%). There wasn´t association between the incorrect technique and the person who taught it (p=0,114). Finally, this study showed that 81,2% of the study population presented an incorrect inhalatory technique. Conclusions: The percentage of incorrect inhalatory technique, in the general population, is high. Despite it was not found an association between the incorrect technique and the person who taught it, there is a high percentage of errors and it was even demonstrated that being instructed by a pneumologyst does not guarantee a correct performance. |
