Sumario: | Introduction: Having dental indexes witch are able to objectively assess occlusal alterations are essential for public health. Also, it is well accepted internationally for making decisions by clinicians. Objective: For those reasons, the purpose of this thesis was to use the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) to determine the severity of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment need in schoolchildren who attend "Domingo Faustino Sarmiento" school in the district of Ate Vitarte in Lima. Materials and Methods: A Descriptive study was made with 198 school children between 8 and 10 years old, who were evaluated by an intraoral examination using the DAI. Demographic data such as gender and age were collected from case to case. Results: The 19.2% of the population had severe to very severe malocclusion and need of orthodontic treatment. The occlusal predominant feature in those cases was the dental crowding. Conclusions: It is concluded that most of the schoolchildren evaluated do not require orthodontic treatment evaluated, however it is important to control the population that needs it, because, although is a minority, those occlusal disorders are a problem for the health and quality of life. |
