Sumario:SBE 221 I History of the Built Environment I 3 Credit Hours Course Instructors Garrett Smith, PhD garrettsmith@arizona.edu OFFICE: Architecture 311D Office hours by appointment Marilu Pineda, Dr. marilupinedag@arizona.edu There are no prerequisites for this course. Course Modality: Hybrid with online lectures and in-person discussions. The study of the history of the built environment provides a general under- standing on how human societies have adapted the form of the built environment to their unique cultural, political, economic, climatic, and environmental challenges across time. This course explores the history of the built environment through the lens of six global climatic zones, providing an opportunity to explore the built environment across the world and throughout various cultures. This course will explore how the climate, landscape, and other factors have shaped vernacular architecture and 1the built environment. Students will analyze the built environment in three scales ¿ landscapes, urban form, and vernacular architecture as a response to the multiple climatic and environ- mental challenges that societies have faced throughout history.
